Weathers been kinda crappy around here lately. Lots of snow. Heading home last night I was heading down a hill and saw a truck coming towards me in his lane. Got closer saw he was stopped with his headlights on. Couldn't see past him with his lights on but started slowing down. As soon as I passed his lights I saw he had pulled a POS truck out of the ditch but it was in my lane with not a single light on. Hit the brakes and took the ditch still hit his rear. Came to a stop and got out of the truck. The other guys started cussing and screaming so I grabbed my Ccw being that it didn't look like a peaceful discussion. Started heading their way and they hopped in their trucks and sped off. They never saw the .45. Anyways everyone is ok. The X blew a l.f. tire, door, mirror, bumper, fender, grille and I guess I clipped something with the r. rear. Was still running 45 when I tagged em. Going to lift it and new tires sooner than I thought. Also going with the 07 grille. Just glad I wasnt in the g.f.'s Escape. Hoping I find em. Small town area and I have a lot of friends looking. Mainly upset because if it was the g.f. by herself it could been a lot worse. Rant over.
Some things are unavoidable. Sorry to say, I think this isn't one of them times. Personally when I see a vehicle isn't moving on the hwy, I slow down enough so I don't "out run my headlights" untell I'm clear of the obstruction. It's something a defensive drive does. Also, I'm usually in a 41,000 pound vehicle, so I'm on the look out more than a lot of people.
If it was a tow truck pulling someone out, would you have slowed down more?

He said he thought they were just stopped in the opposite lane I don't think he knew anyone was pulling anyone out until he was too close to do anything. If you crawled to a stop every time you passed a car stopped in the opposite lane, well around here anyway it would take you hours get across town.

I guess around here, someone stopped in the driving lane on the hwy/county road mean problems of one kind or another, so I slow down as much as needed. If they are on the sholder(out of the driving lane totally, or as much as possible), or on an approach, usually don't slow down too much, but there is better visability of your lane when they are over that far.
Also, if they are stopped on my side of the road, I move over to the left as much as possible. Sometimes requires slowing down for oncoming traffic.
Couldn't tell they were stopped till I was pretty close then we started slowing down. Truck was in park so no visible brake lights and it was dark outside.

Ok fair enough on the highway but got the impression this was not a highway, I drive on a lot of county roads, lots of farms and a lot of people stop for various things and although I do slow down if it was dark, and I see his lights and he looks to just be sitting there (not uncommon) I'm not worried, slow down a bit and go past him maybe inch a bit to the outside. Then at the last minute I see he has a vehicle attached to his back end sitting in my lane, completely dark......would I be slow enough on a county road to stop in time? NOPE I'd probably smack into this rear end and do the same thing the OP did if they got "lippy".
If you are going to pull someone out in the dark and be working in the oncoming lane the responsibility is on you to light things up in warning. Yes other drivers need to assume the worst and try to avoid these kinds of accidents, but I thought you were a bit harsh on the OP stating he could have avoided the accident if he were a "more defensive driver", sh&t happens and this day it happened him, could have been any of us. Not being grumpy just felt the need to defend this guy because I've done the same thing hundreds of times and never had some idiot sitting with a dark vehicle in my lane. If they had I'd have hit it too, cautious or not.
