3.73 vs 4.30

Why does the F-350 Dually come with 3.73 gears and the F-450 dually comes with 4.30 gears?

Also which would get better mileage?

I will be pulling a 5er with a Gross Weight of 15,500 and pin weight of approx 2,250.

3.73 would give you better gas mileage than 4.30. you are going to get better pull power with 4.30. if you are not going to do a lot of hauling or pulling i would stay with 3.73.

I can't imagine a situation where I would want 4.30 gears. someone should do some figuring but I would bet locking out 6th gear with 3.31's or 3.55's would have the same effect as 4.30's in 6th gear. remember you can always gear down with lower numberical gears and a 6speed auto.

For what it's worth, I traded my TT for a 15.5k gross 41ft fiver with 2350 pin weight. My 2011 f250 psd with 3.55 and 20's tows the fiver like a beast, although airbags were a must. I wouldn't go any lower than a 3.73 in the f350. I average 13 mpg at 55mph, 12 mpg at 65mph, and 11mpg at 70 mph with the fiver in the long rolling hills of Georgia piedmont region. The same truck towing the 7k lb TT got 10.5 mpg at best and 9.5 at 70 mph. The truck towed the TT for 30k miles and the new fiver for 400miles since January. With my current setup being the same as yours, I would go with a f350 srw at least and drw350 at the most. It's amazing the difference aerodynamics have on Mpg's

Your numbers are well within the F350 DRW ratings. I don't know about frame and the rest of the underside, but the 350 vs. 450 far as specs go from what I can tell are different gears, and the 450 gets the super 60 in the front.

That said, the 450 will get worse highway fuel economy due to the 4.30 gears, but they give it more grunt getting a heavy load rolling.

That said, I'd deal with 4.30 gears, IF they still offered 19.5 tires and wheels on a 450 pickup. With the only current offering being 17's, I'ms sticking to the 350, and I may go american force 19.5's later.

I have a 350 dually with 3:73's and my 5er comes in over 19,000 loaded up. Truck and 5er roll down the hiway, up the mountain, down the mountain, off road between 29-30,000. I drive about 78 mph on the interstate and 68 on the two lanes. This truck has plenty of grunt to pull that load. Last summer me an ma put 4400 mile on in one trip. Took 3 1/2 weeks and I got 8.8 mpg. Driving slower would have helped but wouldn't have been as much fun.

A set of 4:30's would have kept me in the power band better on hills. But, 78 mph with 4:30 gears would net about 6 mpg. 3:73 is a real good balance of power and mpg. IMHO

This got me thinking about Uncle Sam. Can we order a new door sticker with a higher gvwr? Mine shows 10,000 but I could have ordered the same truck with a higher sticker if I asked for it, right? So can we order a new one from Ford? I would like a 11100 like the new 2013's.

Ford's not going to sell you another door sticker. The F250 is either 9900 or 10000 for 2013. Only way to get higher than that is going to be an F350, which has a SRW max of 11,500.

Thanks everyone - it'll end up being an F-350 then.

I need the mileage more than the grunt power.

Here at home I don't have anything heavy to haul so the 5er will end up being the heaviest.

AND I know photos or it never happened!!

It may be a long while but belive me I will have plenty of pic's!
