Exhaust

I have a 1979 Ford F150 with a 400 engine that I rebuilt. I will be installing headers on it. I am doing everything I can possibly think of that will get the peak fuel mileage. On that same note, I am a Disabled Veteran, and I don't like a LOUD exhaust. I like mine nice and quiet. So, I am trying to find a way to have as much freeflow exhaust as possible, yet, have the lower decibels as well. Is that possible? And, is it possible without spending a fortune? I'm open to any suggestions on what type and brand of mufflers to use.

USMC, 14 years before getting a medical discharge. Thank you for your service. I have a son in Afganistan, in the Army right now. When I was in South East Asia in 1991, I never had a thought that I would have a child serving there 22 years later. Anyway, back to buisness. That's the best sounding exhaust I've heard yet. I was leaning toward a pair of Magnaflow XL 3 chamber's.

Likewise thanks for your service. VA is a pain in the butt...I'm back and forth with them trying to get my stuff straight with them...

but anyhow...the Jones full boar look similar in construction to the magnaflows you are looking at only difference I see is the Jones Full bore quiet tone mufflers have less baffles on the inlet and outlet..I dont know how the magnaflows sound but prob not too different could be a little quieter...I want to put 2.5" pipe from the headers back I bet it will sound good. I might go with the magnaflows they are pretty cheap on ebay $53

I just went to the link you just sent to me. They cost about $7.00 more per muffler, but, I like the sound of the truck series muffler better than the quiet tones. Not a whole lot of difference. Just enough to sound a little better.

You can still stick with the Magnaflow types(free flowing) but get the largest case and length that will fit. Another quiet muffler is the Dynomax Super Turbo. It also has good flow. The chambered mufflers dont have the best flow. While I am not a fan of over the axle exhaust systems I would recomend that also. Mandrel bent if you can find it. That will put the exit as far from you as possible. No 4" tips either.

One thing to remember. It might be worth while to email the company and ask what year, make and model vehicle that is in the company videos. It may be a newer vehicle with a cat and it can have a much different tone breathing from our old iron lungs...

Thanks AK. You seem to be knowledgeable in several fields, so I'm going to change the subject a little bit. My 1979 Ford F150 short bed 4x4, had a 1978 351M engine in it and a C6 Automatic Tranny. Both needed to be rebuilt. Last week, I came across what I thought was a jewel of a find. I found a 1978 Ford Bronco with a 400 engine (which I know, is visually identical to the 351M), and it had the same Tranny, a C6 Automatic. And both engine and tranny had been rebuilt with 0 miles on them. I got the whole vehicle for $1000. My plan was to put that engine and tranny in my truck and crush the bronco. Crushing the bronco would pay me as much as I paid for it. So in other words, I got the drivetrain for free. The problem I found while removing it from the bronco is that the tail housing between the tranny and transfer case is 8 11/16 inches long. The tail shaft on my truck is 5 11/16 inches. Do you have any inexpensive insight on this matter, or am I in trouble with my wife? LOL

My 400 has 2 1/2" dual pipes with dynomax super turbo mufflers. They are quiet and have a nice sound, in fact they are too quiet and I'm going to remove them and install some flowmasters. Lol. Good luck.

You might have me on this one...

Do they both use the same T-Case, or was one a NP205 and the other a NP203?

I am hoping that someone with more knowledge on the 351M/400 engine/C-6/T-Case combo's chimes in soon......

Djmichael- stock or performance rebuild? Estimated horsepower? For MPG, you want your exhaust tuned for your cruise conditions, which are way different from top-end performance conditions. You wont loose significant top-end power either. Smooth bends and a good muffler will keep the motor from choking.

For a stockish rebuild, I would X pipe the headers at whatever the collector diameter is, then mufflers and small tailpipes. Hopefully 2.5 collectors. 2" tailpipes are fine- the gasses will have cooled/shrunk considerably by the time they leave the muffler and a small diameter is required to maintain velocity.

If you y-pipe, then go 2.25 single tailpipe.

Any Walker muffler will work fine for cruise MPG. Jones quiet tones look good to me as well, at 2x the price of a walker.

Well, I've made a decision. I love the way a Flowmaster 52571, 70 series muffler, sounds. But, I think $145 each is way too much. I've decided to go with the Magnaflow Universal 12586. Still, it's $104 each. Quite expensive, but I'm okay with it I guess. I seen a video of the Flowmaster 70 series. Absolutely loved it. Then, I seen a video of a Magnaflow 12256. It was pretty quiet, but not quite a s quiet as the Flowmaster 70 series. I decided on the Magnaflow 12586. I could not find a video on it. But it is bigger than the 12256. As a matter of fact, it is about the same size as the Flowmaster. Actually it is about an inch thicker. So, I am assuming that it is every bit as quiet as the Flowmaster. Now. What will an X pipe do for my exhaust?

I just purchased a 79 with 351M and it is a 2.25Y pipe with a cat and cheap auto parts muffler dumped behind the cab and it's quite. I imagine it would whisper if the pipe continued to the rear bumper. I'll be hacking it up the run H pipe, 2.5 back to glass packs and side dumps lol.
Tried to get a video but battery is dead.

As for an H or X pipe it will help even out the flow from the engine. H and X pipes both sound a little diffent and if you google it there are plenty of debates on which one is actually better. I prefer H pipe due to it being easy to do your self. But if you have the tools and skills or are getting it done at a shop I'd recommend an X pipe set up.

im not sure how quiet your talking but i know dual 24" glasspacks or cherry bombs will be quiet if you use 2" pipe. my inline 6 with basically open manifolds screams like a demon and when i slid the blown out 4th owner glasspack i have it was a quiet tick. even at full throttle i could hear the leaves that i ran over through my floorboard rust. just a thought

Thanks for the thought Parker. I sure do appreciate any input or advise I can possibly get. But I believe my 400 with headers will be a good bit louder than a 300-6. I believe I'll need something a little more ballsy to handle it. If you catch my drift. I do love them 300-6's though. Them things sure got a lot of *****, don't they? I have a feeling though, that by the time I get this 400 done, at todays cost of gas, I'm gonna want your 300-6. LOL!
