My son is looking at the above explorer it has 154k miles, is at a used car Dealer, rather buried behind a big snow bank,,had not been run in a week or 2, dealer hooked up a Jump pac,,,the 5.0 lit right off, sounded good no exhaust leaks or ticking,,my Question is, any Idea what transmition is behind the 5.0 engine in these Explorers ?
Are these Explorers Good Rigs or are there known issues with them?
the 5.0/4r70w Explorer(96-01) is the most rock solid, most reliable drivetrain EVER put in a explorer.
my current '98 5.0 has 151k on it and runs/drives like a top. i also have one out back that has 230k miles that starts runs and drives fine and is all stock except brakes..ect
That makes me feel better reading about how reliable the 97 ish family of 5.0 AWD explorers are. I bought a 2000 Ranger that was rebuilt using a 97 4x4 Ranger frame and it was repowered with a 97 5.0 AWD running gear. It makes a little clunking noise when you make sharp turns on dry pavement or gravel but other than that I love it. I show it quite a bit and it has gotten lots of head turns when people hear the rumble of the Magnaflow dual system. If I could keep my foot out of it, maybe the mileage would be a little better.....nahhh
