So, a large buck hit my truck a couple weeks ago and I'm considering buying a complete 1992 F350 Crew Cab XLT to swap the drivetrain out of my 1990 F350 Crew Cab XLT.
The 92' has no engine or trans left in it because the owner was going to do a "cummins swap" but backed out when he took a look at all the work required and the price to do so, and in order to fund his swap, he sold the idi and zf5 that was in the truck. So he's left with a drivetrain-less 92 that he'll sell for 1500 dollars; the truck is spotless inside and out.
Would it be possible to bolt my newly rebuilt and upgraded E4OD into this chassis by means of simply transferring all the wiring over, getting an automatic shift lever setup, and probably an auto gauge assembly? I did a bunch of searching and really only came up with the other way around ZF5-into-an-E4OD.
It stands to reason that if you can swap one way, you can swap the other. Only that's a lot of work, IMO, to keep the weakest link in these trucks, why not just find another ZF5?
Just saying, but $1500 for a rolling shell seems pretty high to me, I'd get him to go down some.
Im in the process of swapping out a E4OD for a ZF5. Process is the same but reversed.
What youll need:
Tranny (obviously)
Trans crossmember
Wiring Harness
Front & Rear Driveshaft
Some way to shift it (either floor mount or grab a steering column)
Some way to cool it (either aftermarket or a radiator w/ cooler lines)
E4OD Starter
Flywheel
Torque Converter
And a whole lotta patience!

Not a bad price if it's a D60 4x4, if not it should be really really nice or try and beat him down a bit.
Can't help but ask, how dang bad did that buck mess up your truck? Seems like for 1,500$ and the work of a drivetrain swap you could straighten yours out?
