On my 83,f150 5.7liter 4x4, I've noticed the power steering fluid is running out. Obviously a leak. Is it repairable or do I need to put on a new pump? If repairable, pictures would be helpful. Thanks
There is a little hose on the back lower part of the pump housing that should be held on with a regular hose clamp. This is the low-pressure line and it's just a regular hose (like fuel line). Might check that.
Lots of places for leaks. You are going to have to get dirty and crawl around with a flashlight to find it. If it's all over the place because the fan has been blowing the oil all over, you will need to clean everything up, fill it with oil, and start it and carefully look it over to find the leak. Oil leaks can be hard to find, but persistence pays off.
in my experience, hose connections are the most common place for leaks, though its also possible to have a bad pump or steering gearbox.
a couple of notable leaks i remember were a chevy that was leaking from the high pressure hose where a section of hose connected to a section of steel tube in a factory-crimped connection which came loose.
another was in a different chevy where the pressure hose found its way up next to the exhaust manifold and burned a hole in it.
a certain ford i used to own had a pressure hose blow right out of its fitting on the pump.
a ford LTD i used to own had the steering rack crack itself wide open, spewing fluid everywhere.
most of the rest were just the usual old hose, loose clamps, etc.
so look around, see what you find, and repair as needed.
