When I bought the truck I did all the normal checks, including the fluids. Oil looked good and was at the proper level and it looked clean. So I continued to drive it for a while before I changed the fluids. When I did change it, I drained A LOT of oil and refilled it to its 6 quart capacity (it's the 5.8). It didn't even register on the dipstick. I knew it was a 6 quart system, so obviously I had a problem. Out of curiosity I added an additional quart and it still didn't register on the stick (I drained the quart back out). Figured someone put the wrong dipstick in there, so I bought an aftermarket one for the truck that I hope is accurate.
So, I know too much oil is a huge no no. The system was at least a gallon over-filled before and who knows how long it was running like that. It seems to be fine, but does anyone think I can expect some problems as a result?
If it's overfilled by too much the counterweights on the crank can contact the oil, causing aeration and foaming. Oil can also get forced past the rings into the combustion chamber, and it can also get forced through the PCV system causing a mess.
My 90 f 250 with 5.8 takes 6 1/2 quarts. The owners manual says that's what it takes, so I asume it's the correct amount. I have owned the truck since it was new, so the oil pan is factory
What year is your 5.8? Also F-150 or F-250 or? Maybe someone here with a like vehicle will carefully measure their dipstick and give you the measurements. This would assume you have the stock dipstick TUBE.
It's a 93 F250. The tube definitely looks stock. And the dipstick is a Ford OEM part. The guy I got it from was big into 5.0 Mustangs, it is very possible he used one from a 5.0. A measurement of the dipstick from a 5.8 could be very useful. It was always a pain to put the dipstick back down the tube, like it wasn't meant for it.
The dipstick on my '94 F-150 with the 5.8 measures 28 inches to the FULL mark, if you measure the hooded part on top which also fits over the dipstick tube add a half inch. Part number on the dipstick F2TE-6750-DA. Without a parts book I don't know if your dipstick should be the same.
Thanks a lot. The one that was being used in my truck is about 25 1/2 inches to the full mark. Part # E8TE-6750-AC. Like you said, who knows if your truck would use the same one, but I'm thinking that it shouldn't be 3" less.
