Coolant smell, '99 E150 Conversion.

No overheating and no apparent loss of coolant fluid. However, when I opened up again, I did detect a small "dribble" of coolant coming from the area of the heater core. I don't think I mentioned previously that this is an ambulance that is attached to the Ford E450 chasis and it is the heater core in the patient compartment that I just detected fluid coming from. But I am still perplexed as to why, before the coolant was drained and flushed, the odor was so terrible? Could the ATF have done that to it? When I check the ATF dipstick what am I looking for to tell if there is a transfer between the ATF and the coolant? Thanks again in advance for all your feedback.

Check where it leaked - you might have mold or mildew growing there. That could certainly give you a foul smell.

I had leakage from the steel lines at where they are secured going to the rear of the van, the bushings holding the line sort of limited leakage, not sure why they would not use stainless steel or aluminum, like the AC lines, the leak was slow, nearly impossible to spot, but once you removed it from the bushing it poured out.
