I want to add a back-up camera to the back of my cab-over camper to hook up to my Edge insight monitor. I think I would like to install it above the door next. Just wondering what some of you guys are using?
assuming you are keeping your in-mirror cam? I ran a camera from the front, mid top edge of my bed pointing at the 5th wheel hitch. I wired in into upfitter #3 and plugged the video into the edge. When I flipped the upfitter switch, the edge displayed the cam automatically. The picture quality is not good. It gets better with the quality of the camera. I could watch my hitch up efforts instead of trying to see over the read middle seat headrest. Since then I have added another cam to the rear of the 5er for backing up. I will mount it mid bumper. I really would love to add one to the top front cap to see tree limbs hanging down (we camp a lot in the forest). God luck.
I have the built in tailgate camera that displays in the Nav screen. I added a second camera on the back of my Horse trailer. I ran the wire up and hooked into my Edge. Since that wire is connected near my gooseneck hitch. I installed a 3rd ( cheap license plate type camera) in my bed that shows my ball and hitch when I hook up. I leave the Edge plugged into the bed camera until after I'm hooked up and then switch that same wire over to the lead coming from the back of the trailer. I have to physically connect and un connect the trailer wiring each time I hookup the trailer, So no big deal.
For the back of the trailer, I ordered a 1/3" CCD with 18 LEDs so that I have good night vision when I'm backing the horse trailer into tight spots at night.
mrjc, I like the idea of the upfitter switch to turn on the camera.
Painted Horse, I also have the tailgate camera but I loose it when I load my cabover camper. I will have to look into wiring in or hooking up a camera to that input, it should be just a simple camera right? It just won't have a the normal RCA type plug. Do you know of anyone that has already did that?
For the Edge CTS, it is just a normal RCA plug, If you want to plug into the Ford plug on your tailgate. that is a proprietary plug to Ford. Buy the pigtail that goes from the Tail gate camera to the bumper connector. Cut off the camera end and splice in your camera wiring and use the appropriate length of wire to reach the camera. When ever you pull off the tailgate, Just unplug the tail gate and when you load the camper, plug in the new set up
I think I saw that pigtail listed for around $28 on the Ford Parts list
