What is the average temp of the 4R100 transmission. I just installed a Banks gauge using the test port on the side of the transmission and the needle barely moves. The scale of the cauge starts around 140degrees. Banks says this is normal, just wanted some other opinions?
Yep, thats about right. 140 to 150 degrees driving around town unloaded is where mine normally runs for this time of year. You will notice the outside air temperature will be a major factor in where your temps will run. During the winter here is Georgia mine will hardly ever go over 135 to 140. During the summer it may get up to 155 or 160 on a 90 degree plus day. The highest I have ever seen is 185, that was towing a 27 ft 7000 lbs travel trailer laster summer with an outside air temperture of 93 degrees. I do have a Hayden 679 Aux. cooler with a electric fan installed. I manually turn the fan on anytime I'm below 35 mph. I also use the Mobil 1 synthetic fluid.

ON EDIT: Welcome to FTE. I just noticed that was was first post. Lots of good folks here. BTW You can find gauges that start at 100 instead of 140. With the gauges that start at 100 you can actually see when the fluid comes up to temp.
In Houston summer traffic, I run around 150 to 165 unloaded. A lot of guys opt for a tranny temp gauge that starts at 100 for just the reason you suggest: most barely see a 140 gauge move, especially if you live in more moderate climates.
