On my 94 Explorer Sport, I have to jam it into 1st, and also into reverse. The problem is even worse when the transmission heats up (after driving for 20 minutes at least). We have replaced the clutch, release bearing, pilot bearing, and have bled the air out of the system at least twice. I have a new master cylinder ready to go in. Any other suggestions?
I'm not sure how these trucks are on the clutch bracket but...
Look at the firewall where the clutch pedal pivots and make sure it's not flexing or broken (the firewall) when you apply the clutch.
Well, it took a long time, but we finally got that shifting problem remedied! After replacing the master cylinder, we had NO clutch. After trying to bleed the air out, it worked a little, but not a lot. It took 3 guys to bleed the system a second time, one from under the Explorer, one to watch the air bubbles out of the top, and the other to aggressively pump the clutch. I am very proud to say that it has been one week and my truck is working great! It was also suggested in a repair manual to bench bleed the system, which makes a lot of sense. This did work for us, so hopefully it will help anyone else having the problem. Good Luck & thanks for your suggestions!!!
