Sounds very high for labor, at the least.

Is your truck 2WD or 4WD? If it is 4WD and you only regear the rear axle, then you have effectively lost 4WD. You will tear up all kinds of stuff if you were to put it in 4WD.

For $2300, I would've figured out how to do it myself. No offense, but I have a serious issue with paying for labor because I always seem to get bent over the counter in the end.... If they don't screw me on price, they screw me on quality.

As an alternative to paying for gears, you may be able to find axles for sale on craigslist with the gears you want already in there. Its an "easier" install be cause it isn't so precise and you could realistically do it yourself with only paying for new U-bolts. This is a very common occurrence in the Rangers I dabble with.

Keep in mind that cost was for both axles, I would guess w/ factory gears 1/2 - 3/4 of that price was just parts. Regearing isn't rocket science but nor is it something you want to tackle w/ no experience - you can destroy your brand new expensive gears if it's not set up properly. It's a very precise job and you need the proper tools.

Swapping axles is an option, but he's got a 2006 so he can only look at 2005 and up, those are more expensive to start with and if he has 4x4 then he needs to find front and back that are geared the same. Not sure you would save much.

That sounds about right, I was quoted 2800 at the ford dealer and 2400 at a private 4wd shop,,,,

I have a guy that will do it for $300/axle if you bring him the parts. If anybody is in the Birmingham, AL area let me know and I'll send you his info. He does a good job and was recommended to me by my trans shop and those guys have an excellent reputation locally.
