I'm looking t a 1995 f350, 7.3 diesel, 5speed manual. Pictures look great, 130,000 miles. Guy wants $6500. My problem is that the truck is in Spokane WA and I'd have to drive it up the Al-Can to Alaska, about 2,800 miles.
I really don't know anything about this truck other than what the owner has told me. He said it has a bad voltage regulator or batteries but he would take it cross country tomorrow if he needed to.
I'm wondering if this is worth getting? Do you think I should worrie about the drive on a truck I don't know? Or are these reliable enough that I shouldn't worrie too much?
Wow. Risky taking a truck with a charging problem that far.
At a minimum you take it to a parts store and get both batteries checked separately and also check alternator.
Then get all the stuff to change the oil. I don't care if the owner said it was changed 500 miles ago. You change it and put the correct diesel oil in it. Either motorcraft oil from Walmart or rotella t6. There are other oils that are acceptable but you'll need to go to the diesel section and ask.
Check trans fluid. Top off rear diff fluid.
Give it a real good test drive. I don't know what else you can do really. Being that its such a drive to get there and back (or fly) I'd hope the seller would be nice enough to let you check this stuff out before you bought it.
Find a parts store common to your hometown and where you're buying the truck, then get a lifetime alt and a good set of batteries. That way you can warranty the items if necessary.
Sounds risky, I would do just like UNTAMND said. You also need to think you will have to have a place to plug a diesel in where you are at. We had a 7.3 liter 96 and had to sell it because we had no place to plug it in at wyoming.
My 460 was a pain (cold Maine winters) My powerstroke with motorcraft oil started fine. Cycled the glow plugs twice and it would lope and stall occasionally, but usually it would stay running.
Synthetic oil helps a lot.
Replace glow plugs and buy a stancore relay for it instead of the stock one.
That will help a bunch.
