Love my Aerostar, a '96 extended 4-liter with 187K on the odometer. Recently a problem has come up, only shows up on long trips. I almost always keep the fan on "high", but switch position does not matter. After driving for a couple of hours, the airflow from the vents diminishes (front only -- the rear unit works normally). Eventually there will be no flow at all. My mechanic can't figure it out, because everything works fine as long as I'm just driving around town (trips under 1 hour). Also, things return to normal after the van has sat overnight. Anybody run into anything like this before? TIA--
I had to take a peek at the unit when it started. The front unit can be seen if you look undert hte glove box and look through the vent door. Most the time I seen this it was on the outside of the unit. Look for water on the ground or in the bottom of the box..
Icing comonly comes from a low/ impropely charged on the a/c unit. when was the last time some one had a set of gages on yours or work been done to the system ?
Thanks guys, I'll certainly check it out the next time it happens. Dan -- last time I had it serviced was just a few weeks ago, the A/C was not putting out cool air. My mechanic found the system was 3 lbs. low, so he recharged it and put dye in the system. Brought it back a few days later and the dye showed a leaky line going back to the rear unit. They replaced that and recharged, now I get cool air but this other problem has come up.
Its icing up. I have an Aerostar and never had this problem with R-12, but after conversion to R-134a using the same evaporator, it will ice up on long trips, usually when humid. We just turn off the front unit for a while until it melts.
Thanks Aero, only question is, why it just started happening? I've had the van almost 7 years and this problem just came up after the recent repair work. Also, this system came out of the factory with R-134a.
