272 newbie
fixin to plan out the resto of a 55 f100. i'm pretty much new to old trucks, i work on old landcruisers. i have a feelin i'm steppin into a new realm. ha ha.
i'll get some pics and crank up the beast tomorrow, but for now, is there anything i need to lookout for special with this 272?
thanks,
jonathan
I'm fairly new here, as well as with fords but my ol' dad said the y blocks had a problem with oil getting to the top end. Check to make sure the rockers are getting oiled. I run a 292 in my 54 and am grtting ready to install a tri-power. Please keep this forum in mind for any question most of these guys know their stuff ( I'm the one that doesn't) Kurt Y-blocks rule!
Be thankful if it is a 272 as that can easily swap parts with later years. Probably the best upgrade is a 57 and later distibutor and intake. The later dizzies use both mechanical and vacuum advance, the earlier are vacuum only.
Or you can plug the 94 carb vacuum port and either drill and tap the intake for manifold vacuum or use a spacer plate with a vacuum port.
Yes, the rocker shafts are known for oiling problems, due to non detergent oil sludge. When I first got my 54 I cleaned the pan, pump screen and rocker shafts; then went with Castrol 20W50. No problems for about 4 years.
Latest wisdom is to use a diesel truck grade oil as the oil companies have constantly reduced the % of wear inhibitors in S type oils. Fine in modern engines but problematic in oldies that use different materials and tolerances.
Im starting to change all my old engines to CH4/CI4 grade oil.
is there any way to go electric on the diz? i just did an HEI conversion on my land cruiser, and it's so awesome. no points and 1.5 mpg better (somehow).
any ideas on where to get that 57 stuff? i could tell you where to find any landcruiser part, but ain't got the slightest idea with these trucks.
also, i'm pretty sure it's a 272. i'm bout to post a pic of it, and several of the truck in my gallery.
thanks again,
jonathan
