rear spring pack differences 250 vs. 350
This may be an old question, but I couldn't find a definitive answer in my searches. Pardon my "newby-ness".
I am curious to know what the difference is (if any) between the F250 4x4 and the F350 4x4 in terms of rear springs. I ask because the truck I now own was pieced together from a few donors and I'd like to know what it is I've actually got in terms of load carrying capacity.
The front axle is 1979 F350 4x4, but the frame rails and rear axle and spring pack are (so I'm told) from a 1978 F250 4x4 Camper Special. On top of this, the P/O had all the springs (front/rear) re-arced and added one leaf per pack.
Is there any way to confirm/identify what it is that I've got and what my carrying capacity is?
Cheers,
Roy
Before '77.5 the F250 springs are narrower (2.25")
Both had a 5 leaf pack. If you have more than 5, someone added a leaf..or two.
yes, filthy, there are six leaves in the rear pack...as the p/o had told me he added a leaf per pack. thus, there are also now three leaves in the front packs.
so...if the width of the springs is the same between a '78 F250 and a '79 F350, but the thickness of the spring packs is different...am i then to assume that there is a difference in load carrying capacity? is it this difference in spring pack thickness that makes the difference between a 3/4 ton and a 1 ton...or is there more to it?
cheers,
roy
So, what is your concern about load capacity? Do you want to load a skid of bricks on her and worried about bottoming out?
filthy, my concern is this: i have what is meant to be a 1 ton truck (and would like to use it as one), yet the rear spring pack was donated by a 3/4 ton. given that both the 1 ton and 3/4 ton trucks of this vintage came with 5 springs per pack, i wasn't sure if there was any difference in load carrying capacity.
now that you made me aware that there was a difference in pack thickness, i thought i might need to address the "lack in my pack"! however, i am hoping that with the addition of a long leaf per pack by the p/o that the truck is still capable as a 1 ton.
simply put, i want to know that when i go to the local building supply center or the local auction or whatever to pick something up that the truck can handle a 2K pound load. as an aside, i am considering adding air bags.
thanks again for your thoughts,
roy
