Timing 240 ci.

Hey All,

I am trying to find specs for setting the timing on my 1965 f100 with 240 ci. with manual trans and single barrel carb 1100 autolite.

My Ford manual says I should set it at 6 degrees BTDC, but I can't find the correct idle speed required in the manual. Looking elsewhere I get conflicting data: 525 rpm, 600 rpm, and 800 rpm. I assume one of those is for an auto trans, and one may be for an engine with emission control. I am in Gilbert, AZ at about 1200 feet above sea level.

Anyone have some clear idea on what I should set the idle at while setting my timing? Is 6 degrees BTDC correct?

Thanks in advance.

"correct" is really whatever works best for you. lots of people run a little more initial timing than the factory calls for.

as far as the difference between 525,600, & 800...eh- i wouldn't even sweat it.

with all that said- all this and more would be in the Haynes manual for the pickup. for $10, its a trove of technical information.

Elevation is a Air/Fuel Mix concern not idle speed. Use a vac gauge and tune the A/F Mix with idle speed (rpm) around 700-750. I usually pull the carb to distributor vac line at dist and listen for vacuum at idle, try to get the idle down low enough not to hear much of anything. But without obvious poor idle, should be between the numbers you posted. Then start the A/F mix tuning with a vac gauge connected to intake (full vac source not ported). Working back and forth with good vac readings and idle speed. Highest vac, good idle, no vac at idle on ported vac line. Then check plugs for a reading of a beige tan. White, too lean, black too rich. //Helps to clean them up before you get started. No false readings hopefully
