Good info guys, so the plug issue wasnt corrected in the 08s was it?
And i know every vehicle has/will have its issues I just like to do my research, before I bought my idi I spent a month researching it and making sure it would do everything I needed it to , be reliable, and I could fix it if it happened to break
I have an '02 F150 5.4. Was filling up with gas the other day, guy at next pump saw mine and said, hey, our company had a fleet of those just like yours - best we ever had! That made me feel good of course. Even with these ridiculous spark plugs! One day, I'll change them...

My Excursion has the same ridiculous spark plugs, and they are nothing to be afraid of. I did mine a few thousand miles ago, and when I changed my COP boots two weeks ago I retorqued them all and none of the were coming loose.
As long as you follow the torque specs there's nothing to worry about.
Just to make sure I know what im talking about, the 5.4s plug problem was that they wouldnt come out easily b/c of swelling?.....and the 5.4s also had coil pack problems, correct?
Well, Im definately not afraid to get messy but when I do work on my truck I like to know exactly what im doing so i dont end up breaking/making the problem worse
I have a 2010 Platinum with the max tow and it does a great job towing my 7000 lb travel trailer. I have some high passes that I travel over and I use the cruise control. It will hold the 60mph over most passes.
I have been very satisfied with it's performance. and looking forward to using it this summer.
I believe the spark plug problem (if it was a problem) was addressed in mid year 2008.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy one again knowing what I know after using it to tow.

Per Wiki, the plug problem was corrected in the 5.4 for engines produced after 10/9/07, so some 2008 trucks would have had the problem plugs and some of the later production trucks would not have had the problem. Not sure how you would check--the newer engines would use a different plug number, but I don't know if they would have changed the owner's manual or if there is any other quick physical exam you could give the engine to confirm the changed version.

The early 5.4L 3V engines used a two piece plug. In many cases, the plug would snap in half, a special tool was then needed to grab the plugs remaining surface to complete the extraction.
If the plugs were changed out early enough in the engines life at say 60-80K miles, then the problem could be mitigated to varying degrees. The plug change on the mod motors is still an expensive venture if you hire it out.
As for the COP's. All of Ford's later engines are using them and none of them are immune to failure. They're not hard to diagnose or change if a failure occurs. A simple scan device will pick up a misfire.
I had the '07 5.4L in my F150 w/3:73 axles, good running truck but I overheated the tranny too many times and by the time I found out how hot that tranny oil was getting, I decided it was cheaper just to trade it in for my present '10 5.4L, this '10F150xlt is way nicer than the 07xlt was, in ride, feel on the road, power with the extra two gears in the tranny and gas mileage improvement. The '10 does have 3:55 axles but w/the 6-speed tranny, power is there and whenever you need it just put your right foot into it.

How hot did you get the trans on your '07? How did you do this? Did it have the factory towing package?
