hi i just bought a 78 ford bronco with a 351m with 96,000 miles from the original owner. it runs great but it has a vary loud squealing noise that is driving me nuts. i replaced the plugs, wires, cap, button, belts, and oil when i got it. i also removed all the old vac lines that i did not need. i ran it with out the belts and no mater what i do still have the noise. i have one idea left and that is the distributor. there is a lot of play in the button when i move it back and forth. i think that maybe the distributor is junk and making the noise. i dont know i just need some help
thanks bruce dye
I had one do this one time. It was an intake leak. I didn't have time to fix it right but I had ae edelbrock 4 bbl intake and carb, I took the 30 minutes and swapped them and that fixed it. I would say go climb a hill on the highway and see if under acceleration climbing the hill it goes away or diminishes slightly then it is vaccuum related.
You said "It runs great" If so it's not a vac leak. But, you could spray starting fluid around the intake area- gasket area. If the motor smooth's out, you have a vac leak. If not then look for something else. Check to see if you have a bent pulley, if could be rubbing something as it turn's.
its not the starter because it does not go away. i dont think it is a pulley because i took off both belts just to make sure it was not any of that stuff.
it does ideal well. starts easy.

If the started stuck in, the noise wouldn't go away as long as the engine was running. Next time after you start it, take the cable off the selonid that goes to the starter, if it quits, thats the problem, if not keep secrhing.
you replaced the belts, are they tightened correctly? Also, I've had alternators squeal before dying and currently have my power steering pump squealing quite a bit. I'd check those, or maybe even the water pump?
I thought he said he ran it with no belts and the noise presisted, I don't think it is belt or pulley related. I had a 400 make a whistle sound and it ran fine. It was an intake leak and I fixed it myself, but it ran perfect with the intake leak, you guys never seeing it doesn't prove it is impossible, Me having it happen proves that it is possible.
I don't think it is pulley or belt related. If it was the starter spinning with the engine it would be ruined by now. May be intake leak or base of carb. I bought a rebuild carb once, 2 bl. motor craft, it had an unusual air or vac leak in it . It ran good , just made that noise and it bothered me enough that i took it back and told them it was bad, got another one , no noise.

1977/79 F100/350 & 1978/79 Bronco 351M/400: With dealer or factory A/C, there's an adjustable idler pulley that contains a bearing that screams like a stuck pig when worn.
Dealer A/C uses a different pulley (D8RZ-8678-A) than factory A/C (D8OZ-8678-A) which is the same as 1973/79 V8 Passenger Cars (all, except 460's).
O.K. you ran it with out the belts ? But the crank is still turning, so is the crank balance or the pulleys on it rubbing the timing tag or a bracket of some sort ?
