What does everyone do for tax prep? With getting married this year and having purchased a new 5th wheel(home), I've thought about having someone do them this year, but wondered what everyone's thoughts were. I've done H&R block software myself the last few years.
I have used Free Tax act for a number of years. Its free for federal and like $15 for state. Though this year my taxes have gotten really complicated and we are going to an accountant.
Can't help much, I always file free for federal and state, and my taxes have never been complicated. Since I have been unemployed, I have not made enough to even file last year, or this year. However, with this new job, and me being sub-contracted, I can only imagine how complicated it will be next year, so I may just pay someone to do them.
I have been using them for years. I have several complicated things with my taxes and they take care of it all. Owned home, rental, married, several W-2's, 1099's, 2 home businesses and so on... Best part is I have never stepped foot in their office. For years I have mailed all my info in, last couple I have scanned and emailed it. I always work with Trish, let her know I referred you. It will lighten the mood some her and I get along pretty well I call and email w/ questions sparaticly though out the year.

Should I tell her lupseven referred me? Or just the 'guy with the brush guard and blue spring'?
I'm struggling with TT right now. I made a bone-headed move I think.
In 2007 I put $5k in an IRA. But I wasn't qualified for an IRA deduction because of an employer sponsored 401k. I should have put it in a Roth at the time. That's the bone-headed part #1. Still, the taxes were paid at that time.
In 2012 I got around to converting that account to a Roth, so now I don't want to pay taxes again on the distribution. So far I haven't found where TT covers that situation. This may have been bone-headed move #2. I've got a feeling they will want me to upgrade versions.
Thanks. That place is really close to me if I ever need their service.

I figured this out. Form 8086 is required, but I had to go directly to the form to enter the 2007 info. The step-by-step method doesn't prompt for the info.

Yeah that's why I call her so much, too many odd tax laws/rules that can mess up your tax liability @ the end of the year.
When I file I send costs of everything and let her figure out what I can write off (usually most of it), I still get Questions from her every year. Last year was the first year I had to pay. Mainly b/c I no longer have a home or a rental, those give a ton of possible deductions.
