I've got a '99 F250 SD 5.4L and would like to get rid of the engine alltogether and replace it with a Ford Racing crate engine. I'd like to get 'er over 400hp and preferably closer to 500, rather than buy a new truck would just like to swap out the engine all together. Does anyone know what I'd be looking for specs-wise for compatability and fit? Got around 15k to spend on the project. Not looking for advice on why this is a poor choice or anything like that, just looking to get it done.
Another 5.4L or a 6,8L will be a bolt-in swap. Anything else will require some engineering and fabricating. Where you run into challenges is with the PCM choice, since the transmission and certain truck functions also need to be controlled.
Also, keep in mind that most of the Ford Racing crate engines are high horsepower engines. This isn't necessarily what you want for a truck engine. These trucks are heavy and require a lot of low end torque to get them rolling. The high horsepower of the racing crate engines is usually achieved at the expense of the low end torque, This is why drag racing cars use loose torque converters, the off idle torque isn't there to launch the car, so the torque converter allows the engine to rev up to a higher RPM, 2300 RPM for example, on a full throttle launch.
I am not saying do not do it, I am just saying to be careful with the engine choice or you may not be happy with the end result.
