Engine Swaps

Ok this may cause a heated argument so please dont get affended. I am a true to the bone Ford Guy, I just want to ask the question why do so many people build an awesome classic Ford put tons of money in chrome and custom wheels and other stuff, but then destroy it all with a dime a dozen Chevy small block!!! Please keep it friendly but lets discuss this issue.

Hmmm. I don't know of anybody like this. Sounds a little like cross-dressing or something else weird.

Maybe I don't have enough diversity in my life?

I cant believe you have never seen it, way too many people out there doing it, dont get me wrong I understand that building a truck is what the builder wants, I just dont ever see someone build a Chevy truck with a Ford powerplant. Also if it was about Chevy is a better powerplant that is BS. I was an engine machinist for somtime and repaired way more SB Chevy's then Ford. It has to be about the money which is my point dont cheapin your build with a SB Chevy!

The young guys probably aren't aware of it but any of us that have been around the block a few times get really tired of seeing this, if you go to a car show and find a 32 Ford 99 times out of 100 it'll have a SBC under the hood. I have even seen Cobra kit cars with that damned chevy in it... made me sick.. though the one I saw with an all aluminum 460 crate motor made up for that GM abomination.

I agree, I have seen a 32 coupe with a blown 426 Hemi in it. That doesnt bother me because obviously the money wasnt the issue!! Also it had a full forward tilt fiberclass front end which was airbrushed with a huge Elephant holding a rat whos eyes were popping out of his head, get the point? lol I loved that painting I guess it is simply Y cheapin ur build with a low budget easy way out engine!

Well in most cases the guy you're talking to at the car show didn't build the car.. he bought it that way and doesn't have a clue about it or any car for that matter.

Me: "I see you have the factory flathead in there."
Clueless guy: " Yeah it's built to the 9s.. 450hp on pump gas"
Me: Roll eyes and walk away.

In comparison the guy who owned the Cobra with aluminum bigblock power had personally fabricated all the engine brackets, air cleaner, and various other interior bits on the car from billet aluminum(a machinist by trade), so we spent a lot of time talking with him and trying not to drool on the car.. too much.

Me too. I use to laugh when a Chevy boy trying to build a Ford would come back to the shop with the new crank locked up. My first response was "where did you put the thrust bearing?"

GM boy- I put it on the rear where it goes.
Me- Well on a Ford the thrust goes in the middle not on the rear. Didn't you think something might be wrong when you had to use a hammer to install it? Now get you a new set of main bearing's and try again.

I once considered putting in a 5.3 LS series truck engine in my 76 instead of the 390. Modern power without the size of a Modular. If I could have gotten my hands on a Hemi that may have been an option as well. I'm as much of a Ford guy as the next (70, 73, 76) but when it comes to new engines and swaps, the modular seems larger than a 460, with those DOHC. If you want to stay pushrod, ford doesn't have an answer for that driving around on the street. They went with a very dimensionaly large Modular engine that isn't very conducive to swaps where you don't have a ton of room.

Now, if you have 10-15 grand or more to spend I'm sure FRPP has something for you, but you won't find that in the junkyard for a couple hundred bucks at a pull-a-part.

I have a lot of respect for the chevy small block and LS family. They are amazing engines and are great engines for engine swaps in other makes of vehicles. IMO, Ford and Dodge also make some good engines that are almost up to pare with sbc/ls and there's no need to put a chevy motor in either.

my weak baby 99 4.2 V 6 finally locked up after 400 thousand miles I would like to get a motor that would sit down in the engine compartment and all my gauges still work . I have a 90 model 5.0 HO fuel injected but has the old style canister coil with a overdrive transmission . but I was told I couldn't cross the generation gap of going from a 99 to 90 model engine . any Ideas ? jerrysway
