Unhappy 91 explorer electrical problem

I have a 91 explorer that is having a strange problem. The charging guage is running on the very low end (around the N). I had the charging system checked and the system was not charging. I replaced the alterneator, cleaned the battery terminals and the problem persists. I have checked the fuses and they all seem to be fine.

The problem will go away at times as if there is something loose. I have noticed that when the battery light comes on when I start the car, everything will work fine. If the battery light does not come on when the car is started I have the charging problem.

Thanks for any help.

Chris

Check the continuity of the circuit from the ignition switch, through the indicator bulb, to the regulator. Might be a bad connection at the bulb behind the instrument cluster.

thanks for the help. Found out that the alternator I bought was bad out of the box. Replaced it with a good one and everything is working fine.
