Ive always wondered why Fords put 2 cats in line when it could pass as emmission test, with fliying colors I might add, utilizing 1 cat. How I know this, I punced out the rear cat of my Explorer when it was making noises.... That's all over cause I had the cat replaced with a (single) high flow cat; when the front one went on me.
I cut my rear cat off, and most likely going to replace it with a 3" pipe to my muffler. Are you sure itll pass the emissions test with just the first one? Right now it cant pass any way tho until i get my egr valve replaced along with a few other things. But i was also thinkin bout just removing the 1st cat too and just running one high flow cat.

The front cat is basically a pre-heater for the second cat... you won't pass emissions with that alone. You can take it off and run one highflow and you'll pass easily. Magnaflow makes good highflow cats.
Is the First cat just a pre-cat, or are they both identical cats? Also, what are your opinions on bolt-on bolt off cats vs. straight pipe for emissions testing.
Well, in regards to passing the emmissions test, I passed it with just the front cat.... I don't have a canner but I'll try to my emmision test result scanned & I'll post it up.
I don't know how different Ontario's emission guidlines are on a 96 Explorer compared to those in the state of Alaska, & Ohio(if any e. testing are mandatory at all)
I guess, as long as you're not in California.... it wouldn't be much different
As for the cat(front only) it went bad so I replaced it with a highflow cat. about a mionth ago. Will be due for another e test soon in July/aug
