My '84 bronco with the I6 has a 3" body lift and 33" mud tires, the concern that I have is that I keep on "burning out" the farthest back u-joint on the rear driveshaft. The last one that I put in there lasted only 500 miles before destroying the entire joint to a point were there were no bearings and it was half done eating away the actual metal of the x-part. I have put a few u-joints in since I put the lift on....but mostly because I would put a little too much foot on the gas, and not enough on the clutch.
The only thing that I can see that isnt quite right is that the part coming out of the differential (ford 8.8") is a little bit loose. Is this somthing that is telling be that I need to do some rear-end work, or should I just try to tighten the nut that is holding it in place. Thanks for your help!
The yoke nut needs at least 200 lb-ft on it, but it's a precise setting measure in inch-pounds to rotate the pinion gear. You can get away with cranking down on it for now, but you really need a new crush sleeve and the proper tools to set it right.
I went through a few u-joints faster than I should have, and discovered it was my technique of installing them. I was allowing a needle or 2 to fall down inside the cap, causing them to disintegrate in a few thousand miles.
