Hello everyone, I am in the process of re-building a 79 f-150. just got through swaping the 351m and auto to a 460 and 4spd. Now im looking to install a set of dana 60's. Do I need to try to use the coil spring front set up, or change it over to leaf springs? Thanks!!
Well first off Welcome to FTE. There are a lot of knowledgeable people on this site.
I would go with a leaf spring front end. They are easier to deal with IMO and the Dana 60 is made for them. I'm not sure if the coils would kill them or not but I would go with leaf springs. It might be difficult to set up but if you have a JY near you just find an out F-250 and grab all the front end parts off of it.
Thanks, I can make shackle mounts fairly easy, what im not sure of is the steering box. The 3/4 ton box is mounted on the inside of the frame, my 1/2 is on the outside. Just courious what I will get into there.
I would try some of the suspension guys in the 4x4 mags to see if there are kits to put the right mounts on to a 60 for your truck the frames are different between the f150's and 250's finding a Dana 60 hi pinion will be kinda hard they only came in 78-79 heavy duty f250's and 79 f350's then appeared again in the mid 80's in f350's and beam axle f250's
Thanks for the info, im sure glad I found this site. I have located a 79 f250 in a local junk yard that has the 60's in it with 3:54 gears. I know its not going to be an easy swap, but I think it will be worth it.
