Dumb Newb Question

Ok here comes a real dumb question......
If I hook up an amp for a sub using the preamp output on my radio, will the sub get louder when I turn up my radio?
Also, If I have 150 watts going to my sub, what kinda power should I have for the other speakers in my truck.
Sorry for the Newb Questions, just trying to figure this whole Audio Stuff out
Thanks for your patience....

Dumb Newb Question

welcome aboard. the only dubm question is the one we dont ask. We will do our best here to bring u up to speed on car audio so ask away.
Yes the bass will get louder when u turn your radio up.
What set up do you have and is the amp 150watts RMS or peak? You want to set the gains on the sub amp to match your speakers so your bass doesn't drown out everything else.
If we have more info on what you have and what you want we can better answer your question. Also if your thinkiong of replacing anything do you have a budget in mind?

Dumb Newb Question

Thanks for the welcome. I currently have a pretty low end system but I am planning on upgrading soon. Right now I have a Kenwood HU and some Kenwood 6x9'2 up front and some Pioneer 6x9's in a homemade box behind the seat.

I am looking at getting the following:

Alpine CDA-9807
Alpine ERE-G180
Infinity Kappa 60.5cs
2 Polk Audio/MOMO MM104
Rockford Fosgate Punch 301M
Rockford Fosgate Punch 301S

I think this setup should sound pretty good in my truck.
Any comments or suggested replacements on the list

I plan on builing a new box for behind the seat to house the new subs. I was thinking about using 63/4 in subs, but advise I have gotten here changed my mind.

Thanks again for the help....

Dumb Newb Question

I always love to hear somebody new getting into the stereo realm. The first thing you should do before buying a bunch of equipment, is research. Visit your local stereo shops. If they dont help you then dont buy it from them. The reason for this is as follows: Many shop come across with alot of attitude. Dont put up with it! You can buy stereo euipment almost anywhere at very competitive prices with a warranty, you dont need to put up with attitude and secret install technique's. Next, you can research information on the web to include all kinds of tutorials on installation which can be very helpful. Once you've done your research decide on your budget and what you want your system to do for you. Whether it be competing or just lyour listening pleasure. Then find your your best bang for the buck (make sure to consider warranties, installation, and word of mouth or reputation.) for what you are doing. Remember mr. blow joe down the street may know how to build a sub box for you at a cut rate but that does'nt mean the quality is right or that it's got a warranty. E-mail me if you need more infor. Dumb Newb Question

Since I live in a pretty small town, there is only one shop here. I have heard a lot of bad things about them so I dont think I will use them. The stereo realm has grown so much that I now find myself just about lost. I have been lookin at crutchfield's lately and that is where I came up with my list of equipment. I am pretty handy when it comes to working with wood, so I with enough research and guidance I believe I can build my own boxes. My biggest questions come in the installation and tuning of the equipment. Also, I dont want to buy too much. For example, I have an EQ listed but do I really need one? Also I am not going to be competing so have I selected too much as far as amps go. I was thinking 2 10" subs but do I need only 1. My budget is around 1500 for this little project I have come up with.
Any suggestions are helpful and advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.....

Dumb Newb Question

That would be a good system, but you can do better and save money while your at it. Momo subs aren't that bad, but they are grossly overpriced. Your paying for the Momo name, not the technology used in the sub. Same goes for RF amps (or anything RF). RF isn't "bad", but they are very overpriced for what you get.

I'm also of the opinion that an EQ should be the last item purchased. Install everything correctly (this includes proper gain setting, crossover settings, speaker positioning, proper box size for subs, adequate power for all speakers, etc.) and then check for frequency anamolies. If these anamolies can't be rectified using any EQ functions in your HU, then look into an external EQ. Everybody can benefit from an EQ, but if the improvements you seek are "negligible", it may not be worth the extra cash...to you.

$1500 is a very, very nice budget. Honestly, you could put a world class caliber system in your truck for that kind of loot. Buy your stuff online and install it yourself, and your budget is more like $3000 retail. I usually advocate listening to speakers (especially your front stage speakers) before buying them, since I believe they're the most important "component" in an audio system. Problem is you only have one store in your town, which doesn't lend itself to "auditioning". If you would like specific advice on what "stuff" to look for, just list the music you listen to, and your music listening habits/preferences (ie, do you love to crank it...do you put paramount importance on SQ...BOTH[?]).

With regards to Crutchfield, they have very high prices. They also have very good customer service. I bought my HU/changer and one of my amps from them. My dad bought an Alpine and 2 sets of speakers from them. Occasionally, you can find good deals, but not often. If you really wanted to stretch your dollar, though, shop elsewhere. Ask around on this and other forums for reputable online dealers. I can think of 7-8 off the top of my head that I've done business with and wouldn't hesitate reccomending.
