Okay I've searched and searched and can't find anything on here so I figured I'd ask. I'm about to swap a 4-speed into my 48 F1, not 100% sure if I'm going with a Muncie or a T10, I've got both, but I need a shifter. I'm going to run my stock bench seat so I need something that will clear. Any suggestions?
I had a top-loader in my truck and ran a Hurst shifter box on it. Hurst sticks bolt on so I made my own shifter stick by bending a piece that would bolt in place of their stick and then welded a factory stick to that piece I had bent. I was able to make it come up exactly where I wanted and it looked like a factory style shifter. I was never able to find Hurst, Mr. Gasket or any other brand stick that would come up in the right location in my truck, hence the reason I had to build one.
I'm sorry, I didn't read your post as talking about many years back when they were separate companies. I didn't remember Mr Gasket as making shifters before they bought Hurst. My mistake no offense meant.
I once had a bench seat in my 55 ch**y and had a hurst shifter that was made to fit under the bench. It came through the floor , made a sharp 90 degree to the front and bent around the front of the seat bolster. Didn't have to modify the bench either.
No problem Ax, sorry for the sharp response. Bad week, bother-in-arms in law enforcement funeral on Monday and then find out yesterday a friend on the Super Duty 7.3 forum had died. All is better now.
gsato, that's the handle I remember being available, they were especially popular in mid fifty's chevys to clear the bench seat. Hurst used to make quite a few different shaped and length handles, don't know if they still do tho.
I am also going with a 4 speed (have a toploader). Just scored a Hurst shifter and am planning a bench seat. Not positive how its all going to fit but may use the above ideas of some radical bends in some graphed in rods. I have read about relocation brackets but, of course, I would need the applicable rod lengths. Preliminary measurements have indicated that from a straight line between the two forward floor cab mounts to the front of the bench seat is one foot. The bench seat is also not mounted its just thrown in the cab and pushed all the back so the measurement is plus or minus a few. I was just trying to an idea. The forward mounting bolt for the shifter bracket is also one foot from cab floor mount line. 2nd and 4th is clearly of the question until resolved.
