standard distributor replaceing the hall effect one
Hello
I have a 1987 Fuel Injected 3.0L V-6 Ford Areostar Van with 5 speed transmission. This uses a computer and I am told that the computers between the automatic and standard shift will not interchange, any one know why or if this is true? Further with older rigs having electronic ignition I have had success with interchanging the electronic distributor and coil (actualy any coil will work) with a standard points system, is there a standard points distributor (from any 6 cylinder engine) that will or can replace the hall effects distributor on this 3.0L V-6 engine?
Please repley here and in my hotmail at edmondedwards116(No Email Addresses In Posts!) and I will gladly reply...
Thank you
Edmond Edwards

Yeah, I wanna do that too right after I finish tearing out my newfangled indoor plumbing and build an outhouse. Maybe switch back to rotary dial phones, too.

For various reasons the switch is benificial. First the vacume advance is not depenedant on controls that require each other. Second due to mechanical breakdowns a secondary replacement distributor of a standard nature can get your rig to town for repairs where if the problem may be the computer and the the ignition section of that computer only is at fault, the std one is independant of the problem and can get you home. But thanks for the input.
As for any one else, we all know that the older mechanical systems are easier to fix and less costly for parts.

I apologize for my sarcastic comments, sir. I just suffered a momentary lapse of self restraint.
After something more than half a million miles on the EEC IV distributors, I have had exactly 0 problems with them. I have had to replace 2 ignition modules during that time, so my experience would suggest that I carry a spare module and forget about the rest of it. Although I've had good reliability with points type ignitions, too, the higher spark energy and low maintenance of electronic ignition would keep me from going back to points.
Again, sorry for the unkind remarks.

When I think back to the cars I had with the old style distributors, I can remember spending hours upon hours fiddling with the points to get them adjusted just right. It seemed like a never ending battle keeping the old Mustang running right. After many years with the "pointless" distributor, I would hate to think about ever having to go back. If I ever had the money to buy myself a project car (another '66 Mustang would be nice), the first thing I would do would be to upgrade the ignition system. It's certainly up to you if you want to go backwards in technology. I hope you can get it going without too many problems. Just remember, if you ever do sell the vehicle, be sure to tell the buyer what you have done or they'll sure be ticked off when they start having problems and can't figure out why.

Naw, It is alright, lol.
after consideration I believe that a standard dist. may not work. The computer adjusts the ratio and the advance. With this in mind a vacume or mechanical advance may be advanceing while the computer may not or vice versa. I bought a used dist. from a junk yard and it solved the problem. Ypu are right of course about keeping spare parts, I actualy normaly do the same but in the last six months traveling between Oregon and Ontario, Canada, west coast to East coast and back, finances prevented this and with the Van down, I simply let it sit.
Thank you for the response and as for dist replacement (conversion) I am designing a Boat motor that would use a simular set up and with being on the water it would be keep spare parts or convert and I think due to mass and weight of cargo, points weight less than extra dist. lol
again thank you
