Ford had hardened seats in the 40's Dale, maybe even earlier.
As long as the compression hasnt changed much due to head milling, bore or carbon, then 87 octane is fine. Set the timing and give it a run, flattys do not like retarted or advanced ignitions, both cause hot running.
I have a '50 with the flathead 6 we rebuilt about 10 years ago. I haven't driven it for 7 years except on and off a trailer once. When I drove it in High School I could still by regular (that's regular with lead not regular unleaded). I have been a little worried that I should be buying additive or get hardened seats for it. Now I just need to fix the brakes and about 10 other and get it registered to be back on the road.
