I have a lock & chain mechanism on the hood. The chain attaches to the hood and the base connects to the core support. As already stated, if someone really wants a vehicle, they will get it---usually with a tow truck. The chain & lock I bought off of eBay a few years back and am unable to find the item on there now. Probably sold out. Someone on this site has a nifty way of installing an actual master lock to hold the hood down. This would also be an inexpensive solution.
There are wheel boots that you can buy for a few hundred dollars as well.
I use a lock under the hood like this. Not easy to get at it and I have smaller hands than most. The battery is also disconnected at the same time. So the only way to take the truck would be to tow it is you could get near it. However, the truck is rarely out of my sight when I have it out for a drive and stop somewhere.
I built a concrete block garage behind my house, and currently have the engine sitting next to the rear tire. i don't think mine is in danger.
my daily is left unlocked because the window is worth more than the cds you may find inside. no gps, radar, or other gizmos. even the radio was $30. however unlike most i am the building maintenance tech and am out and about a lot. you would have to know me and my truck to get it out of here.
the best deturant (sp) is lack of interest. depending on location that could be hard with an antique. they tend to stick out.
maybe try to insure it for a crazy amount, it'll cost you more but in case something happens a big check, or 2 trucks may make you feel better?
A bigger concern might be getting into an accident and having to rebuild it. John
John hit the nail right square on the head!
I'd dare say there are WAY more Slicks being wrecked than being stolen. .....and we all know there are WAY TOO MANY air-headed, Dim-Witts that are too busy texting than driving...and doing it on the same road as we travel on.... & that 4" wide center paint stripe doesn't give us much protection from them!
The best we can do to protect ourselves & our Slicks is to ensure each of our 45+yr old ironpiles are SAFE - meaning all the lights, signals, horn, etc. all work; that all four brakes are adjusted to stop securely & evenly; that the doors latch securely (yep, the driver door on my '63 would pop open at will, at speed & without warning! - very eye-opening [especially @ 6:30am in Feb @ 15*F]). Make sure the wipers work. Make sure the tires have safe thread depth to stop, turn, etc. You also want your Slick to be dependable enough to get you from location A to location B without any hangups. To be left along side of the road once a year is enough; more than that and you need to turn up the wick on your preventative maintenance program. Sounds easy & most of it is, so don't cut any corners regarding our prizes, drive sober, safely and alert. No dog on your lap either!
I have thought of doing something stupid to deterr theft as my 2003 F250 has been broken into 3 times and stolen one of those three times. Thanks to Denver police, I got it back.
I'm all about stupid and silly ideas.
I have seen these videos where someone wired up the horn to the brake lights. Everytime someone presses the brakes the horn sounds off.
Seems like a good idea to me but one woudl need a second horn and a hidden switch. The second horn would be placed in an uncommon space like inside a fender or under the truck and hidden. When one leaves the truck flip the switch. If a thief takes the truck, evertime he pushes the brakes the horn sounds off. He may try to unwire the standard horn thinking that is the fix only to still have the horn blare. It may be just enough frustration for him to leave the truck alone.
yup, it's an 11 year old thread, but i did enjoy reading it. and i've got the same concerns living in denver. last year, we had 41,000 car thefts. unreal. i'm gonna be even more worried when i get my coyote installed. right now, it's just an old truck that sits out on the street.
my best theft deterent will be to install a 5 speed manual. along with a hood lock and the club that i now use. i might have to install a hidden fuel pump switch somewhere.
I dont see a problem when it is a general question like this as it is not a problem like "will not xxx"
Also when doing a search on this why have 50 different post on how to secure our truck?
Mine parked in my gauge and if I take it somewhere it is not out of sight even if it is out to eat.

Across all the many forums I’m on, necro posting is considered bad form, and annoying. I agree with that assessment. It’s up to them that know better to teach them that don’t. But you do you, I guess.
