I recently flushed the antifreeze/coolant and got a new 13lbs radiator cap. I installed Zerex with a 75/25(est) mixture. Since then I have gotten a fluxuation from the guage. I used to get right at the O when at operating temp. Now it fluxuation from that point to cold constantly. And this is 95-105 degrees outside with the air conditioning on.
Sometimes rapid fluctuation is caused by air trapped in the system. If there is no coolant on the sending unit, it will read cool.
I usually install a thermostat with a small hole in the top, or drill one there if it doesn't have one.
Other causes include
loose wire on the sending unit (maybe bumped during the flush).
Sticking thermostat - as mentioned above, although you would probably get hotter than normal if that is the case.
Well what's interesting is that it didn't do this until I replaced the cap. I know the thermostat is okay, as I replaced it about 25k. There is a drain on the both sides of the block, however the only one you can get to without actually removing the starter is on the driver side. I'm not sure what size of bolt it is, but I flushed the system completely.
I recently had a problem with mine were the temp would go all the way up to the "R" or even the "M" and then back down to "N" were it has always been no matter if its -30 or 100 above with air on. I replaced the thermostat and it runs great now. I had to drain most of the coolant so that could have helped too. But I went to a 180 degree because I heard it increases the life of your engine and now it reads a little below "N".
