Tranny engine breaking Questions

I have a 2000 7.3 Excursion. I tow a very large three axle toy hauler. I live in CA and there are some big hills. The issue that I'm having is when I come down a large hill and I have over drive off the engine is doing the breaking but the load is to heavy for the engine to hold the load back and I need to hit my breaks and when I do the tranny starts to free wheel and I lose all the engine breaking. I believe that this is the reason that I go through breaks so often. Does anyone know if there is a way over ride this? Any help would be great.

Sounds like your potentially overworking the truck, Does the trailer have brakes? Do you have a good brake controller? There are exhaust brake systems available. What is the weight of the trailer?

Yup, many use a toggle to brake the engine.

Engine breaking

The trailer weights about 13,000lb loaded, the trailer has six wheels and breaks on all six, The tanny does the same thing when I'm not towing anything. Also it has a new tranny as of today and it did that same thing on both transmissions. I'm looking for a way to keep the torque converter lock up. I just don't understand why the when I hit the breaks that torque converter won't stay locked up on deceleration.

Have you ever had that trailer (w/ toys/fuel/water/food) on the scales?

Are you rolling that rig down Cajon Pass?

No question, you need a bigger truck.

I don't notice this at all with my V10. We both have the same transmission. When I come down a pass, I would turn the OD off and engine brake. Then if that doesn't slow down, I use the trailer brakes then downshift to second while using the trailer brakes.

I wonder if that is a safe measure to prevent the diesel from red lining?

Do you have anything to monitor EGT's and Trans temp? Id say do a 6.0 cooler. Towing #13000 on factory ex springs, wow. Im not surprised you are going through brakes often with that kind of a load. I don't think an exhaust brake will help much with an Ex when your trailer weighs more than the tow vehicle and exceeds the weight ratings. I think it is also a safety feature to protect the trans/ motor. Doing that will also cause EGT's to climb quickly.

My Equipment

I have a full airbag setup, four pillar gauges, boost, trans temp, air bags and Ext gas temp. I also have the switch that closes the wast gate on the turbo. The Beast (as my family likes to call it) pulls the load great, just would like to know if I can get the torque converter stay locked up when I hit the breaks, I does stay locked when it is in 2nd, but on long down hills when you can cruse 55 it would be nice for it to stay at that speed, and it would if the torque converter would stay locked up.

Easy there perfect, on an internet forum you're gonna get opinions, answers, off-topic posts, etc. It's all part of forum life.

Beat me to it!

The TC lockup switch works fantastic. I have one on my Ex and it helps tremendously when towing our 10k travel-trailer into Yosemite via 41.

Stewart

PS - Just FYI, It's brakes, not breaks.

I have never noticed this while towing or elsewise. Anyone know if it applies for the V10 also?
