I can't say that I have done it but I think I would go about it like this. Remove the dash from the donor first. Stay several inches away from the good parts. You should then be able to identify where the zillion spot welds are at with it out of the truck. If you then cut most of the dash from your good truck, you will then have far better access for your grinders, drills etc to get at the welds. It's going to be a fairly time consuming affair I suspect.
The guys were not trying to rain on your parade, they were just letting you know it is a lot of work. Anything is possible, and depending upon your skill level, and ambition, it could be a difficult task. Anything is possible. Heck we all ask for opinions, and then do what we want, wheather it is to lead or follow.
Goodluck on your project.
now my opinion....
I would try to patch the original, if it doesn't turn out.... then on to plan B... andthen i would attempt the implation of a new dash.
Cabby Daddy is right. If you insist upon going that route, you'll get all the advice and moral support we can give you - but those of us that have done it, will try to talk you out of it first.
Either way - we're here for ya.
(Put in another 3 hrs or so on my truck today without cutting/scratching myself - that's two days in a row!)
