"Ethical" Poll #1

You see a box at a swap meet.
It has ten parts in it

NINE of them are either what you want or are pretty cool to have - BUT ONE:

It's illegal, dangerous, or will cost someone a lot of money to even be around

*there are other options, but let's keep it simple

*All of this supposes there is no way anyone can prove you bought it

~I already voted, don't let that sway you~

*Also note that "REPORT THE ITEM" is not given as an option - and is not the intent of #2

The reason I state it as I do, you don't steal or come by it illegally. It is just there for you to get...

'SPLAT!'

"Wow, I never thot I'd see one of these again..."

(THE VENDOR DOESN'T KNOW WHAT IT IS)

Why put yourself in a bad position in any way at all. Just walk away.

Depending on what the "bad part" might be, I'd buy it, bury it, and keep it for future use.
I think it would be pretty cool to buy a thermonuke device, and have it, you know, "just in case". LOL

I voted "walk away" as we might do with this very thread!

Then again my favorite cynical saying is: "virtue is just insufficient temptation........." so maybe I'll keep reading to see the final results......................

It really would depend on what that last item was.

R12 Freon? I have no moral dilemma with acquiring it and finding it a good home.

I have been in this predicament. I said walk away, having already gone with a now less than desirable option, that cost me some money

What category would this "part" be in? Weapon, auto, etc? If it is illegal to have, the owner should be informed, then the authorities called for disposal. I have an item that is illegal to use/sell but not illegal to have.

I always refuse to be limited to the options given.

I would negotiate a deal on the parts that I wanted, then tell the seller what I know about the "odd" item.

I with Bruce on this one.

If the 10th part was extremely dangerous, it would have to be reported to the authorities.

This reminds me of a story my wife told me.

She just got a new job with the police department as a secretary. The process for the job took about a

month with pages forms to fill out, credit checks and several interviews.

During the interview process she was screened in a small room. On the table was a pile of coins, I forget

the amount that she told me was there, but it was there for a reason. My wife told me that during the

interview, the detective got up and left the room for a considerable amount of time. I am pretty sure

that he checked to see if the coins were there when he returned.

I bet that those coins disappear on many occasions.

Interesting.

I wonder if the check is that the coins are all there or if the coins have been touched/moved?

As OCD as I am, I couldn't sit there very long without counting them and putting them in order.

Probably if the coins are missing.

There was a extensive background check. Like you I would have to place the coins in order too.

I am sure the extensive paperwork was also testing her organization skills and the ability to perform the task.

She is exposed to sensitive information on a daily basis now and the paperwork has to be accurate since

it may be needed in court. She works directly for the stations major and captain.

NO she does not share details with me, and I do not ask.

Arrange the coins in order, I am way to much of a smart azz to do that. I would add a couple of pennies and dimes to the coins to see their confusion when they came back. Sometimes you have to entertain yourself at the expense of others. As for the original topic I would just buy the parts and deal with this mysterious dangerous item on it's own later.
