ok so i took off the drivers chain last night and from what i can tell it looks like it may have been off several links (probably from slack in the chain. I could move the chain a good inch or more of movement) looks like the tensioner wasn't expanding the whole way) so i cleaned the tensioner up before i put it back together. I took photos of all my marks to verify with you all that i lined things up correct.
It sure looks right. When you set the chains up, does it matter where the pistons are or do you just line up the crank mark and the cam mark with the chain marks and it is good? Can it be 360* off or doesn't it matter as long as all the marks coincide? LOL...you must getting pretty fast at getting stuff apart. Does the front cover just have like one big gasket or are there corners and such that need like RTV? I can't tell for sure, but if the crank sproket has say 20 teeth and it was off 2 teeth that would put that bank 36* out of time from the other bank.....I think that's how you figure that but not sure.
This one has 3 piece gasket that you use RTV on.
As i understand the only issue with the positioning of the crank is the initial risk of hitting the valves if you don't get them lined up fairly close to where they need to be.
I'm getting sick of working on this truck so i sure hope this does the trick! If not i will be out of ideas!
Disconnect the battery then turn the headlight switch on. Leave it that way for an hour. I don't think even a hard reset will help, but give her a shot anyway.
Was 1 cylinder at tdc when you timed, the passenger side cam will have a good amount of tension on it in this position, drivers side not so much, just wondering
look over all my pictures of my timing marks and chain locations. i followed the instructions and posted those before i buttoned in all back up. i'm thinking this issue is a vacuum issue around the pcv valve and tube area
what kind of vacuum should i see and what am i looking for?
I've also replaced all the boots on the coils and put dielectric grease on them hoping that would help....it didn't.
could this be the autolite plugs causing such issues? I just hate to keep throwing parts at it.
Next thought and i'm dreading this.....did they make different heads for the 5.4 and is it possible this one i put on isn't going to work. It looked the same the valves look the same but i didn't think to check a number.
where do i find the # on these heads?
any other thoughts before i find a cliff to drive off of?
