Hey I asked about swapping out my 78 300 inline 6 for a diesel engine on another post. It was recommended that i simply slap a turbo on the motor i have. I've considered this before and when taking my budget into account as well as the fact that the motor only has 10,000 miles on it, i've decided to do it. Im unexperienced with turbos and i needed information on how to do this as well as a list of things i'll need. i'd like to keep things as cheap as possible with as little fabrication as possible. the motor has a standard intake with 1 barrel carb as well as stock exhaust. thanks guys and sorry for the long post.
TBG, I haven't gotten to the assembly point on mine yet. I'd head over to FordSix.com. Several guys there have turbocharged 300s. Theturboforums.com is another good place to do research and ask questions. Just be sure and read all the 'stickies' before you start asking questions. Some of the folks there can be a bit abrupt if you haven't at least tried to do some research yourself beforehand.
My build will be a bit different from yours, I believe. I'm trying to get my max torque below 2000 rpm, so I'm leaning toward what most consider an under-sized turbo to build boost early. The Super 60 series seems to match up best according to the flow charts. I'm also planning on running strictly on propane. I'm not even going to mount a gasoline tank on the chassis.
Good luck and keep all of us informed on your project. I'm sure there are lots here who would be interested in following along.
I did some research over at the websites you recommended (not my first visit there. I like my 300.) and i decided that the turbo will end up being more hassle than its worth to me. The real reason I was looking to charge the engine was to push more air through and improve my mileage (haven't gotten a 100% accurate test yet but the highest i've managed is 18) I'm saving up money to buy some EFI exhaust manifolds and may eventually put a cheap supercharger on the motor. I'm planning on taking the intake off whenever the weather clears up and I no longer depend on the truck. I want to sand blast it thoroughly and polish it up. The manifold came off of a 1978 that had sat for a long time. I soaked the intake in kerosene and did a bang up sandblasting job (this was back when i was about 14 and relatively clueless). I think I will end up happy with the polished intake and EFI exhausts. Those two upgrades should definitely increase air flow. I'm also going to get rid of the stock breather and buy an open air filter to mount on the carb. If I have time i will try to post some pictures and perhaps even a vid. Thanks.
