ok so i was doing some thinking and research and ..... i have decided once i get caught up on my bills( a two month process), I'm going to buy a cheap excursion and do a cummins conversion to it. . so far i have researched that my costs are going to be
cheap excursion in my area $5000-$6000
excursion to cummins swap kit $6000-$6500
used or new cummins motor or totaled complete dodge truck $2500-$6000
total $ $18,000-$16,000
how am i going to do this and offset the costs. im going to do all the work myself and i will sell the motor that i pull out for $1500-$2500 depending on the motor and i will part out all the crap that i do not need $2500-$5500 and then sell what ever i cant part out to a local u-pull it parts place for like $500-$1000. also I currently have a 2wd 7.3 excursion that once i get this conversion done i will sell freeing up $10,000-$15,000
i will be adding a secondary fuel tank and maybe even getting rid of the stock fuel tank and adding a second non stock fuel tank . i will we aiming for 100 gallons as a minimum
and then once I'm happy with it and everything is going smoothly i will be redoing the interior ... i have no clue how long it will take to financially get this all done but i have the wife's permission and when she give the go-ahead i get free range with $$$ and some how she makes it happen
Well around here (PA) I have found gasoline Ex's anywhere from $2500-$10000 or more in some cases. Are you looking for a 4x4? I think finding a Diesel powered Ex might save some work as far as fuel tanks and fuel lines go, unless there is a way to clean out a gasoline tank. But finding a Diesel is going to cost more up front, it might be cheaper just to buy a new tank and lines and find a Ex with a gas engine. Have fun, sounds like a great project.
My thoughts? I didn't realise the diesel trucks were so much more expensive than the gas trucks in the US!!
Why Cummins? the PSD is what I love most about my Ex.............
............and if a swap over is as straight forward as pull it out, stick the new one in, wouldn't there be more Expedition EL's with a diesel conversion? (I have considered it before but it's all the electronic stuff that would confuse me, and then I could see problems matching up the transmission, then the prop shaft/transfer box etc)

i like the sound of the cummins diesel, it just sounds so nice it is also way smother on the power output, it would be a fun project. i can get more power and fuel mileage than with the 7.3 .. the 7.3 is soooo coveted that its like gold ( the cheapest one that is in decent shape is $18-$20+ k) and i wont buy a 6.0.... yes if i could find a 4x4 7.3 ex in decent shape for a non astronomical price i would buy it instead and trade in my 2wd 7.3 ex on it ... then upgrade it .. but up here in the pnw its retarded on pricing for trade in since it is a 2wd and they think their poop they are trying to sell is gold ...
and there is verly little 7.3s for sale here as everyone is holding on to them
there is only one for sale with in 200 miles of me and its $20,000 and has the same amount of miles as mine ... all the ones for lase around here are v10s and cheap like $10,000 cheap or even $4,000 cheap
yeah i seen that . but for $500 more i can get a fully functioning one lol ... and have a v-10 motor to sell to offset the costs.. so far i have found three 7.3 excursions with in driving distance for $20,000 but i would rather not finance that amount as thats what i bought my ex for back in 05
I think you may be better finding an '05 6.0 diesel that crapped out. That it's already a diesel and you won't need to put in the vacuum stuff since gassers pull vacuum through the intake. You'll also have the 5R110 TorqShift tranny. Sell the old 6.0 engine for parts. It could fetch $$$. Just my 2 cents.
:P ok ok your right i could make more powa if i sink tons of $ in ... and yes the 7.3 is the holy grail of diesel .. damn it now you got me rethinking :P but head

and yes this might be true but its only two parts that would need to be swapped out and i have found a few wrecked new dodges ( rolovers) with no frame or motor damage for under $1000 at the auction place.
Or you could just trade that 2WD 2001 diesel straight across for a 4WD with a V-10, save your time and energy, keep the wife happy, save your money, and live happily everafter. I think some people just get on that diesel kick for a different noise, maybe a little fuel savings, more pulling power under certain conditions, etc. (I really don't want to start comparing the two)..............just what I would do. Think about what else you could do with all that time and money.
well here is my issue i love diesel .. i have thought about trading strait across for a v10 one but A i loose mileage ( yeah yeah yeah mileage in this big of a beast is a laughable matter) but i also loose available power and other things ... with the v-10 you are limited to the amount of powa you can make. with the diesel i can make POWARRRRRR lol and get decent mileage to-boot .. plus once the kids are out of the house and older i was going to change this into a land-yot / over-lander for me and the misses and diesel is where its at for that and attaching a small generator for powering devices and heaters and well i could go on for days and bring up schematics that will make an engineer smile like a school girl ( lol)
but this is not about a v-10 / diesel debating thread this is my idea thread on what i was thinking of doing :P
Good luck Jim....I mean Tim (Mission Impossible show) Maybe before your time, lol.
no its not before my time .... here ill give you a sneak peak of what im talking about .. there was a member on this forum back in 05 ish that wend road tripping in the ex and stayed in the truck .. but yeah
if my ex was a 4x4 ( this bugger should have waited to buy one instead of jumping on the 2wd) i would just rig it the way i want .. but thats why i have not done anything to mine cause ts 2wd lol
