the one i'm talking about is the jag xj/40 series cars. they ran from late 80's to early 90's. in mid 80's range rover became partners with jag, for whatever reason i don't know but jag probably needed the $$$. then rr started making it known that they wanted to put their v-8 motor in the new jags...jag didn't want that so the engineers, brown and lane i think, changed the frame and ifs to only allow a skinny 6 cyl. motor to be installed, v-8's wouldn't fit. problem solved for jag...but in doing so they also made the new narrower frames unfriendly to their own v-12!!. then, soon after, ford bought them and they switched back to the wider frame. so, stay away from those xj/40's and you will save yourself a lot of money and time....i know i did.

Do you know what year they (Ford) switched back to the wider setup and what it's like?
I was at my only local yard the other day and came across a nice Jag sedan only to find out it was 'one of those'. Had to come home and check first as I know so little about them, but it had the square headlights.
you're right, the square head lights is the dead giveaway. i think, but don't quote me, 93 was the last year for the xj/40's. they went back to a very similar frame that they used before with a very few minor improvements. i'm still looking myself and up here in the northeast its a rare item thats not often found thats not rusted to dust. good luck on your hunt. i've been on the screen for about 2 wks (layed up w/ broken hand) looking everywhere. nuttin' yet!

Interesting info. Somehow the XJS continued with the "right" IFS after the demise of the V12 in the standard XJ sedan into the early 90's since the XJS's to my knowledge were all V12's (at least in the USA).
yes, all the xjs's were v-12's but the xj/40's are the ones i'm talking about ...these were all, i think all, 4 dr sedans. i had a 91 xjs, it was a v-12 and it was great...till it burned up. it had the wider frame and the ifs that i wish i had now
