hi everybody, like some opinions (especially those folks who live in the snowbelt areas) on getting a brand new truck aftermarket rustproofed.
Ive owned two ford trucks brand new, a 1982 F100, and my current 93 F150 xcab 4x4. Both of these vehicles i took after purchasing over to Ziebart and had them do there thing. Ive been happy with the results so far. Both trucks going into thier tenth year showed only surface rust along the wheel wells etc etc, nothing i couldnt sand and prime and touchup. I took both vehicles back once a year for Ziebarts respray/touchup.
WELL, its time im thinking of a new Ford PU again, ive had conflicting info about rustproofing. Some folks say i dont need it, the metal they use nowadays stands up well to road salt, etc etc..others say the dealer should spray the undercarriage and that should be enough etc etc., others say if i plan on selling in the next 5 years dont do it..etc...I plan on keeping the new truck another 10 years anyway...Is aftermarket rustproofing a good investment on a new truck? Tell me what you folks think? thanks!!
Probably wouldn't be a bad idea. I've seen some shoddy jobs that did no good. They might use better steel these days, but they don't make them to last forever. I never owned a new vehicle but I would rather have it cosmolined. I just oil spray my truck every year.
Most car panels are made from aluminized steel, which is really corrosion resistent due to the aluminum coating. But, when you put these panels in an aqeuous(spelling?) solution with chloride(from the salt/gravel trucks in winter), they will corrode.
As most people have said, how much is peace of mind worth? If I lived in a climate like that (I lived in PA for 6 years, had an AUDI with a scratch on a door that never even turned rust colored), I would seriously consider having it done.
I tell you what, on my 1993, which was bought new by my grandpa, and in wisconsin i might add, and was always pulling a snowmobile trailer in the winter during the worst of the weather. it experienced a lot of road salt and many other harsh environmental conditions. it was outside, never in a garage for the first 5 years, and to this day, after 10 years, there is one spot with some rust, and it is on the bottom of the driver door, you have to look for it. trust me, i am nutso when it comes to how clean my truck is. my point is, it has always been washed and waxed on a regular (whenever it is dirty) basis, always being rinshed underneath, and the like. It's all about maintenance, some people change their oil and do that all the time, but neglect proper body maintenance. just my $.02
I say get all the rustproof protection you can get, because the factory protection is never enough. I don't know about where you live but the road salt and chemicals seem stronger today then they were yesterday here in Wausau, Wisconsin. They do a better job of melting the ice, but they also do a better job of rusting out your vehicle. Also I agree with ftrucktough about frequently washing and rainsing the undercarrige during winter. The last thing anyone wants is to let the salt eat away your truck.
Just make sure that they do a good, clean job. I have seen some trucks with the undercarriage spray jobs and the spray covered bolts and fasteners making them hard (almost impossible) to loosen.
