I have a failed locking hub, and thus need to replace the pair with some manual aftermart units.
I have looked at what's available, anything from $130 for mile markers to $269 for premium Warn units.
What is everyones opinion of what would be the best option? I don't do a great deal of offroad work, but i do do some, and i do need it to be reliable in that regard.
I'm not going to vote because I only have experience with my current setup. Previous owner installed some Warn manual units, which I assume are the standards but I do not know for sure. They work fine but I've never really demanded a lot from them, and I haven't had the truck that long either.
I replaced my ford hub lockers with Warn premium about 6 or 7 years ago on my 99.5 superduty and never had a problem with them. The original lockers are crap in my opinion. The original would seize and I took them apart and sprayed WD40 into them to free them up several times. I bought a replacement ford locker from a scrap dealer for $100 but it only lasted about a year. You wouldn't have to use the premium warn locker but it has a replacement part in it if the locker should break.(according to the parts dealer) and since I was planning to keep my truck for a long time I bought the better one. I've never taken them apart or serviced them since I installed them and I still have my truck. If my memory is correct the ford dealer wanted about $300 apiece for ford original hubs at that time so the Warn were a great deal. Hope this helps you.
Between several trucks in the past I have put over 1 million miles on Mile Marker hubs with NO problems. I did have problems on an old GMC with Warns that had no maint. in 20 years and by disassembling and cleaning them they worked fine. But due to personal experience with Warn Industries I will NEVER have another Warn product on a vehicle of mine.
I've been abusing the mile marker hubs on my 78 f150 rockcrawler truggy for years. I have broken the locking ring that slides to engage twice. Mile markers customer service is great and I can buy replacement locking rings for $11. I keep them in stock now.
On a rig that will get normal use you'd have no problem with them. I'm punishing them on a 7000 lb truck climbing ledges with 42" tires.
I have experience with exactly one pair of MileMarker locking hubs (K5 Blazer with Dana 44 and 37" tires). They both exploded into a million pieces the very first time I used them. And I really wasn't abusing them. To MileMarker's credit, their customer service was excellent, and they sent me a new set very quickly and with no hassles. But I ended up replacing them with Warn Premiums, since I didn't trust the MM hubs anymore. The Warns held up great until I replaced the front axle with a Dana 60 and upgraded to Yukon Hardcore hubs.
On the other hand, I have owned many trucks with Warn Premium hubs and have never once had a single issue with any of them. They're worth the few extra bucks, IMO.
Big fan of the std Warn 11690 model. (IMO) I like the plastic hub instead of the metal premium one because the metal ones have seized on me before in mud and icy water. I have put the plastic 11690 on 3 SD trucks. Never failed me... just my experience
Oh, and don't take out the little set/shipping screw. I called Warn. The head tech told me to leave them in. And I lost one when i Took them out. So they had to send me new screws.
