oil pressure sender relocation.

I see in many locations people speaking of the ford 400 engine having a reverse lubrication.

and thus going along these lines claims that the oil pressure sender location is in the least optimal location for an accurate reading. and to move it to a lower capped port on the block.

my question is. is this the port? or if it is not can someone show the proper location?

Yes, that port could be used for an oil pressure sender unit.

The OE one is at the top of the block, just behind the rear of the intake manifold.

Whoever told you that is wrong. The factory sending unit location on a 400 is the most optimal location because it is one of the last available taps in the oil path, and therefore gives a worst-case reading of the system's pressure, which is what matters. If you read the pressure upstream, you could risk getting an optimistic reading.

If the port in your picture is what people use as the output for the external self-oiling line that some people run, I wouldn't use it because it will be "too strong." Since it's so close to the oil filter mounting location, I wouldn't be surprised if it is.

Here's the summary: don't change anything.

I like that summary !

Racer, do yourself a favour and google 351/400m oiling systems. You'll hopefully come across the context in which the 'reverse lubrication' is an issue, and why then some people run a 'self oiling line'.

Your user name contains a huge clue.

thanks for clearing that up for me. I had/have the issue of the OEM gauge reading past 1/2 on cold idle and reading at the bottom of the normal after warmup at idle

I have since ordered a new oil pressure sender and also a mechanical gauge. just wanted to know the correct location to get a proper reading.

eventually I may do that pressurized line feeding the bearings.

the truck is not a race truck. but since I have picked it up it went from a life of being used 1 time at most a month to being used atleast every other day. and used with constant loads being it is a rollback tow truck.

Im not afraid of working on it. but ide rather catch issues while minor rather then after a breakdown.

ive already installed a HEI distributor, rebuilt the edelbrock 1411(rewired the choke so its not on the coil) replaced the leaking booster and master. electric fans.

if low pressure continues my next step would be replace complete gasket kit, water pump, timing set, hv oil pump, and inspect/replace anything that looks excessively worn.

has great compression readings all within 10% no oil consumption or noises. but many previous owner fixes/mods I would like to record and fix. like dash illumination blinking with blinkers lol. and the only 79 with DRL

Hi racerc2000,

My old OE gauges gave me bullsh$t readings so I replaced them all.

IF your new gauge still shows low readings, and from what you've said about no oil consumption etc, I'd look immediately at the oil pump and/or oil pump drive shaft.
