I just bought a 2000 F-350 Crew Cab PSD Lariat 4X4 DRW. I bought it in Memphis, TN and drove it home to Southern New Jersey. After buying it I took it directly to a service center before the long ride home. I replaced 4/6 tires, the oil and filter, etc.
They couldn't replace the fuel filter as they seemed to think it was different from normal. Each filter they had for a 2000 PSD didn't fit. The "outer filter" around the filament had an open end and was easily seperated from the filament. The o-rings seemed different too. The filters for earlier models were too long. The truck was made in KY and was pre-owned in Texas or Oklahoma and may have been a ranch truck. Any ideas? They cleaned the old filter the best they could and the truck "flew" the 1100 miles w/o breaking a sweat. An amazing vehicle. This is my first diesel and I'm absolutely in love with the monster. I see I have a lot to learn. This forum is a huge help. Thanks in advance, Geoff.
On my truck, which though older should be the same as yours, the fuel filter and cap are two separate pieces. When I replace my fuel filter, I remove the cap, disconnect the filter from the cap, and reassemble with the O-ring provided. There is at least one company making aftermarket fuel filters that uses a slightly different design: their filter and cap are one piece, so you replace both at once. To get back to stock, you'll probably need to buy a new filter bowl cap, and then you'll be able to use the oem filter. The cap you'll be able to get through International for about $10, or through Ford for about $20. Enjoy the truck, they're pretty amazing, eh?
Amazing is an understatement! Running through the "mountains" of Tennessee and Virginia was a cake walk for it. I set the cruise control on 80 and it never shifted into OD once, just a little whistle from the turbo. The last truck I had with any sort of power was a 79 F-250 w/ a 460. It had bias-ply tires and was one of the scariest things on 4 wheels in the rain. The latest is the 94 with a 5.0. 5-point-nothing as I like to call it. It's been a good truck but can't keep up with my ever-growing construction company. This Super Duty is all that and a bag of chips. I look for any excuse to drive it. "Tampons, Honey? sure, I'll run to the store..." It gets better mileage than the 5.0 and I never tire of the sound of the diesel. I find myself turning down the stereo to listen to it. It's been worth the wait. I can't imagine ever going back to gas. I'm thinking of trading in the Tahoe (yeah, I know) for a diesel powered Excursion.
Any thing I should be mindful of? What might I keep in the truck for "side of the road" quick fixes?
Thanks again for the help. I have a feeling I'll be spending a lot of time here, reading all I can.
Although I have never had trouble with mine, the consensus on this forum seems to be that you might want to carry a spare cam position sensor, as the truck will quit running when/if they go out. They are about $80 through International and $140 from Ford, so I am told. Might want a 10mm wrench to go with that. I have a dark teal truck like yours, except it's an XLT, and I have the same feelings about mine as what you posted about yours. Nothing as sweet as the sound and smell of my diesel.........

Nice, I think I'm in the same boat as you. I just bought an 01 f250 but mine is a regular cab, I could only afford the small cab. I love it, I also own a 5.4L F250 but I wanted a diesel for work and towing stuff and trailers which I do for work. I love it and it's only been a few weeks.

the sensors are now less than $30 from Ford, there is a recall to replace old sensors to the new design
