Looking to get some suggestions on an over heating issue I have with my truck.
It is a 97, 7.3L, whilst towing the boat home from the coast the old girl ran like a dream along the flats. But once it had to start climbing a mild hill the temp gauge went straight into the red.
Would be grateful for any suggestions as to what this might be.
Thanks for the reply.
Last service on the coolant system was 6 month's ago, flushed it and replaced it with a blue coolant from work. The truck is auto and has a banks performance chip. We have always had it set to the race setting. Also has a 4 inch exhaust system.
Cheers
Marc
??? Mind me asking who makes the blue coolant? I have never seen blue coolant other than windshield wash.
Truck should not EVER run above the M on "NORMAL" ..even on hard grades. Without a load at this time of year mine sits on N. What was the ambient temp? When idling do you feel a good pulse through your upper radiator hose if you squeeze it? Is the upper hose hot?
Where is your over flow level in your degas bottle?
Get back with those answers, otherwise I'm guessing your water pump is going out if your fluid level isn't low, if it is low then you need to find out where your coolant is going... leaking or getting burnt.
Thanks for your input Nossliw. The blue coolant is an industrial mix we use on light diesel engines at work as it is less corrosive than cat coolant we use in the bigger engines. The ambient temp on the day was around 35`c. When idling all seems to be fine, thermostat seems to be working and you can feel the water surge in the pipe. The coolant level is doing what it is meant to do and we are not loosing coolant as the cold level is staying consistent. It's seems to be a bit of a tricky one to figure out.
Thanks for your suggestions
On your 97 do you know for a fact it has the long stem thermostat? 94.5 - 95 uses the short stem thermostat with the IH water pump. Ford redesigned the water pump in 96 and it must use the longer stem stat ... as when it opens it closes off another water port, I don't know or understand the particulars.
First welcome to the forum
Second the coolant system in this engines is overkill, so is very weird your issue. When began to overheating? or always has done?. Maybe is the coolant you use or a bad thermostat. I wouldnt discard a bad gauge ??
I recomend install a EGT gauge to monitor the engine with the chip.
G'day all thanks for the replies.
Redneckmorton it has a K&N airfilter and the down pipe has been changed out.
Roentgeep the old girl has been running like a charm in the same conditions till the last fishing trip when it started to get hot climbing.
Oldbird reckon you might be onto something there. How do we go about checking the fan clutch to see if that is where the problem lays.
Marc, I'm not really sure how you test it, sorry. I 'think' that if the blades spin free it might be bad. It should have a little resistance. Someone who knows for sure should be along.
