got a turbo kit today. prototype???

I picked up a turbo kit off of a seller on craigjunk. Guy says it came out of an early 94 idi truck. Has a banks round air filter deal, and has just one exhaust manifold, and the exit line for the turbo oil dump goes into the valve cover "which it came with" A garrett turbo on the setup. The interesting thing is that the turbo dump goes to torward the front of the vehicle. I'll post up some pictures tomorrow. I want to install this lickety split, and it looks like a breeze, as it is just the one manifold and the valve cover, and it is all one piece. Replace the old intake with the new hat assy. and all done. I do need to figure out an exhaust for the thing because of the strange way it dumps, it mounts directly over cyl 3 "may be different, I'm a chevy guy, forgive me" on the valve cover.

Happy New Year

If you post this in the IDI forum, Pre-Power Stroke Diesel (7.3L IDI & 6.9L) - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums , there are lots of guys with the Banks setup that can help you...

not a prototype

here are the pictures as promised, if it was a hack job, it was done by a pretty skilled welder, the welds are solid. but it does not look like a factory deal to me, probably a very skilled fabber.

definitely not factory, or 90's either.
that is a very early 80's unit, looks like a combination of rayjay parts and banks air breather tube..

It's definetly a stock N/A manifold with some square tubing welded onto it. I think its a very well done home made kit. I don't know what the charger came off of but not a PSD or a 7.3 IDI, possible a 6.5 Chebby?

Like these guys said, not a banks unit, not a stock unit. Looks fabbed, but well done. Try cross referencing some of the numbers on it on the internet. It's a garrett so maybe you can run some numbers on their website to see what its from.

nah, not a chevy unit, I have one of those already. I am curious, just got back as a guest from a dinner at a good friend's house, time to start researching.

the way the turbo is run I will have to weld an elbow into the flange, as the exit from the exhaust leaves towards the front of the truck, "stack anyone???"

I just noticed something is missing, that just so happens is very important. I need a wastegate to control my boost, otherwise, boom go the heads.

no data plate, I'm not having any luck on google finding a way to identify without one. It appears to be a stock diesel application unit for a v-8 judging from the size/proportions. anybody have any ideas here?

thanks so far

jargon for this type of unit is free floating turbo, used in commercial diesels, as opposed to internally or externally wastegated just info for the masses in case this happens to someone else.

nope. those units did not use a wastegate, and boost was limited by the turbo housing size to around 10-12 lbs.
and like i said, not stock. it is an abortion designed off the rayjay turbo system of the early 80's.
that system is made to only use the driver side bank of the engine. it will not make much boost because it will only be driven by 4 cylinders, and you will also get a bad cylinder backpressure imbalance using it.
i bet that is the reason it was pulled off and sold, the person that made it realized it was a bad idea after using it.

i would keep the turbo, and scrap the rest of it.

how only one bank???
the way its supposed to be setup is like on a chev 6.5. The pass side exhaust flows over to drivers side "opposite in a 6.5" and then through the turbo housing, besides being inefficient due to lower backpressure on one side than the other because of the distance that the gasses have to travel and loss of kinetic energy over that distance, I should still be able to install it and get like 10 psi right? I just need a little more umph to drive 18,750 lbs 2200 miles home. after that, I'll devise a much better system. can I not install this? would it be bad for the engine? I already bought it, not much left at this point but to use what I have.

thanks

oops, had a brain fart there, and forgot the exhaust exits out of the turbo and not the manifold outlet.
