Dave it's been my experience that the insurance company wants a 2 or 3 written estimates. They then hand you a check in your name for the lowest estimate. You can then do as you will with the check and the vehicle.
If you know any shop owners they can pad the estimate for ya, then you take it to say Alan for instance. You both can make money on this. Buy used parts from the wrecking yards, as shops usually give new parts prices
When my Trans Am was stolen, stripped and vandalized, The shop I took it to gave an estiamte for over 15,000 to fix it. The insurance company wrote me a check for that. I then took it to a friend who once owned a body shop. He fixed my car
as the shop would have, got new rims and Perelli tires and also did a custom paint job on top of it all for 5000.00. I didn't buy a whole new high dollar sound system like I had in it tho.
I heard recently they are putting in a Pick And Pull Yard near Division on West ByPass, across from Bayless. (Oh they are gonna love that).
That's why they been advertising on the radio for unwanted cars.

That's what I've dealt with in the past, but the insurance company I'm with now only requires one from the company that will be doing the work. They work out all the wrinkles with the shop and cut a check to the shop. Kind of weird, but that's the way they do it.
That's great news about a pick n pull. We certainly could use something in this part of the state that might pull the price of used parts down. Bayless will have kittens - unless they've got their fingers in the pot. If that's so - then it will just be business as usual.

Safe journey Rich.
Not much going on here today. I'm taking the Durango up to Chip tomorrow, so I need to straighten up the interior and get some things out of it I might need before its done.
Alan, I've got a question about the '71 that I need some input on. As I've been taking things apart on it, I've noticed that it appears that the remaining floor boards are resting on top of the frame rails. If I recall there's supposed to be some clearance between the rails and the floorboards. Am I correct in thinking that I've lost that clearance because of the loss of structural support in the front mounts and probable decay of the rubber in the rear mounts?
I'm thinking that I ought to just pull the front clip off of it and raise the cab off the rails a bit so I can get to everything a bit easier.

yea dave there should be some clearence.. one thing about rebuilding old trucks is it is hard to find the stopping point.... but new mount rubbers and front mount stands should clear up the clearence issue.. this 80 something truck i am working on has the same problem.. but with alot more rust.. i am thinking i should just scrap it and find something better.. like a 71 or something..

Thanks RC. I had already figured that the rubbers would need replacing, so it wasn't unexpected. What I'm really grappling with is whether I should try working around the front clip or should I just take it apart and make everything easy to reach. I've got to change those front inner fenders anyhow so its not like it wasn't going to come apart anyhow.
