over the last many years i have used this site to help with minor and major problems with My 99 F150, 2000 Expedition and 2000 Excursion. with that said i have been able to keep all the vehicles in good repair and problem free driving with the help of other FORD ENTHUSIAST.
Mine does the same thing. Stops when the engine reaches operating temp. I figured it was from the mileage. I used to have a 1988talk Lincoln town car that did the same thing as well. It had 185,000 miles when i got it. My Expedition has the same mileage.
Could be piston rattle as well. As the pistons warm up they expand and the noise goes away. However a piston probably wont make a distinct tick though.
OK, I'll throw in my 2 cents. 2003 Exp 5.4 starting "tapping" on my way to work one morning. Stopped by my mechanic and he said leave it here for the day. He added Seafoam to the oil and let it idle awhile to circulate good. He says, drive it home tonight (35 miles) then bring it back tomorrow and we will change the oil . The ticking stopped before I got back the next day and that was 20,000 miles ago. I have 237,000+ miles on it now. I usually add a bit of Seafoam a day or two before an oil hange. Helps keep the lifters free of carbon he said. I was tickled it was that minor. Mine also seemed to come from the passenger side top end.
