Possible Engine or electrical problem need suggestions
What Happen! - As I was driving the van down the thruway it starting making a ticking noise. This ticking noise was not a metal to metal noise but something close. Maybe an exhust leak. It continued for about 3 to 5 miles then engine started to buck and loose power. Engine light and battery light came on. After leting van set for the night. I tried to turn it on. It started fine. Gave it some gas and it still ran fine. However, a hissing noise is pressent now on the passenger side of the engine.
Troubleshooting Steps so far.
1. startied engine - letf it at ideal, remove positive cable from battery. engine still works. This to me says that alternator is working. any other thoughts
2. time chain - engine starts - runs ok at ideal - this means to me that time chain is ok too - any other thoughts.
3. Called a friend and he suggested I check for compression. Bight be a head gasket leaking thats making the niose. - any thoughts.

The last time I heard a ticking noise on my 91, the ignition coil wire came off the coil. Each spark that jumped the gap, caused the tick. I found this out by removing the rear cover to the engine, then driving around with the windows down, so I could breathe. This also reoccured at a later time. In each instance, the coil terminal had an excessive buildup-- white residue. The last time that I cleaned the terminal, it was so pitted, that I changed it out.

Not sure what engine you have, but the inital impression is you have a dislodged vacuum line, possibly from the PVC valve to the vacuum tree. If so, check/replace your PCV valve. If the same thing reoccurs, you likely have a burnt/bad valve pressurizing the crankcase.
