Hello all,
I am thinking about buying an 01 f250 4x4 xlt supercab long box for towing. This truck has 41000 miles on it and is equipped with the v10 and automatic. Are there any problems I should for in this particular model. thanks for any help,
David
I'm a diesel guy myself but I haven't heard about any problems particular to that year or anything. I think the 99 v10 had less power due to head design but that's the only difference I know of between them.
I haven't heard of any. The sparkplug thing seems to be a rare occurance. I have scoured these forums and others after I bought mine in Jan of this year. It had about 12K on it.
The only thing if you could call it a problem is, it is not a motor to easily mod. Even with that limitation I absolutely love mine.
Good Luck
The 2001 F250 S/D had the PSD and I really had no problems with it. My neighbor has a 2002 w/V10 and his only problem is "mpg". Mine got 20 to 21mpg (no load) and his get 13 to 14mpg (no load). He has had no problems, either. Good luck!
My sister and brother-in-law have a 2000 with the PSD, and I have a 2000 with a V10. After driving both of them, I can tell you that, especially if you are going to be towing, you will want the PSD. Neither of us have had any problems, other than minor things. But, he gets 22mpg on the hiway, towing or not. I get 14mpg empty, and 15mpg towing, I know that sounds backwards, but it is the truth. My V10, with the K&N FIPK, and exhaust is a gutless wonder, IMO. Their PSD is bone stock, and is way faster, has tons more torque, and gets tons better mileage. If I were to do it all over again, I would never buy a V10. I would definately try to buy a PSD. Also, the resale is tons better on the diesel, and they are a lot easier to sell or trade-in. Just my opinion.
Also, with this question, you are going to get all kinds of people trying to tell you what way to go. If I were you, I would just go look at both, check prices on both, tow a little with both, do research on the cost of maintenece of both, and even talk to some mechanics about both. Then, use your brain, and decide wich one would work-out for you the best. The diesel will have a little more cost in the maintenence side, and a little more time involved in that side. But, if you do that yourself, it really isn't that much, and the PSD will last longer.
Thank you for sharing your opinions with me. The owner of the truck has loaned it to me to drive for the week and decide. I will let you all know my decision. Again thanks for helping a new guy out,
David

Gutless wonder???? PSD way faster stock????
You must have left a rag in your air filter, or have your truck tied to a tree
My B-I-L's Banks 7.3 PSD isn't faster than my stock V10 and his is WAY faster than a stock 7.3
Towing wise a PSD is better, but add in the added extra $4-5 large for the motor, extra maintenance.....
This 22mpg claim is the usual fairy tale 7.3 PSD claim. Try an honest 16-18 average. (I have 3 friends with them) Others get as low as 10.5 empty, and some 12-14. And your V10 15mpg towing......well...maybe thats why its a dog, 'cause its running on 5 cylinders.
You both must be using the "trip computer" to calculate mpg. Try the manual method. Either that or both of you only drive downhill
Ths PSD is great, but lets be real about the analysis part Besides, I believe the original post was inquiring about purchasing a gasser
How did this discussion turn into a V10 / PSD arguement? I believe the initial question was regarding the reliability and userability of the V10. As you can see, some people on this site refuse to understand that each engine in the Super Duty stable has its own purpose and market that each fit in extremely well.
The V10 is a great all purpose gasser that can tow huge loads and deliver a very high level of reliability. It can tow well over 10,000 lbs, as can be attested to by many V10 owners on this site. Though gas mileage is poor vs. a Toyota or VW, it fairs well in comparison to other gassers in its class (ie. 8.1L Chebby, etc)
As with any major purchase, you must decide what fits your needs. I found that the V10 happened to fit mine the best.
Hey gus,
Personally I have no desire to own another diesel. my last tow vehicle was a 87/88 ford f350 equipped with a diesel. My question was about issues as in problems, if any with the 2001 f250 4x4 v10 gas as described in my original question. Thanks,
David
