1964 f100, 292 reinstall, all reference marks match up for dist. good idle upon start up but tiiming is too high (25 to 30 btdc) . Truck quits running when attempting to lower to proper timing sretting. Any ideas what I may have missed or is something just slightly off where it should be?

Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks, Ed

I would first check the balancer. If it has a rubber core it could be spun making the timing marks useless.Set number 1 to TDC on compression stroke and check the balancer. It should be close to zero.

Just trying to set the crank to TDC by the piston is tough to do because of the amount of dwell the piston has at the top of the stroke. More accurate would be to use a dowel in the #1 spark plug hole and run the piston up about half stroke and mark the dampener. Make a mark on the dowel, then back the engine up so the piston comes up to the same mark on the dowel. Of course you'll have to keep the same angle on the dowel. Make another mark on the dampener and split the difference between the 2 marks on the dampener. That'll be where the TDC mark should be.
Hope this helps.

Hey, Thanks for the advice. I have since discovered there is no vaccume from carb. I pulled vaccume on distributor diaphram with a hand-held pump and advance worked, vaccume held (no leak down). I think I will go with a new edelbrock carb (500cfm) and a crane electronic swap out for the old points. Also noticed the coil not fireing plugs like it should, seamed like it had to be cranked several times in order to store/distribute any charge??? Will switch that out for a crane unit as well.
Any excuse to upgrade with new parts is o.k. with me. I let you know how this goes.
Thanks again, Ed

simple things frequently screw me up, maybe you too.

Assuming the distributer and all things lined up as you said.

Setting the 8 to 12 degree btdc at 700 -900 rpm idle requires that the proper mechanical advance weight springs are not broken/loose and that the vacume advance is disconnected and the vacume hose pluged.

if the idle is over 1300rpm then the mechanical advance will be shown by the timing light, the timing you are trying to set is with NO advance....

The best way is to go buy a crank timing kit for $100.00 and that way you know the Crank, Cam, aqnd piston is all correct.
